Magnachip Semiconductor Corporation has released two new 6th-generation (Gen6) 650V Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) specifically designed for use in solar inverters. The new IGBTs feature polyimide insulation layers, integrated fast recovery anti-parallel diodes, and support operation up to 175°C. The MBQ40T65S6FHTH model reduces conduction loss by 25%, while the MBQ40T65S6FSTH model cuts switching loss by 15% and conduction loss by 8%.

The use of polyimide insulation layers allows the devices to pass high-voltage, high-humidity, and high-temperature reverse bias tests, ensuring stable performance in extreme conditions. The integrated anti-parallel diodes help to quickly clear residual current, reducing switching losses. With high thermal tolerance, the devices maintain operation even under elevated temperatures. The MBQ40T65S6FHTH is optimised for 15 kW solar inverters, while the MBQ40T65S6FSTH is tuned for 3 kW systems.

As a result, solar inverters using the MBQ40T65S6FHTH achieve around 15% higher system efficiency, while those using the MBQ40T65S6FSTH see an 11% efficiency gain. These improvements help solar power systems generate more energy from the same input, reduce power losses, and lower overall operational costs. The IGBTs also enable longer system life and higher reliability in industrial motor drives, power supplies, and uninterruptible power systems.

“In the second half of this year, we plan to introduce a broader range of Gen6 650V IGBT products with current ratings from 5A to 75A as part of our strategy to expand our pipeline of new-generation Power products significantly,” said YJ Kim, CEO of Magnachip. “We have a proven track record in Power with nearly 1,000 chip designs and the manufacture and shipment of more than 23 billion units since we entered the Power business in 2007. Moving forward, we will continue to strengthen our IGBT product family to drive innovation in renewable energy, automotive, industrial and AI applications.”
