The original Firefly series became a cult classic, mixing Western themes and humor into a dangerous sci-fi universe. Fans never got a second season, but Joss Whedon wrapped up many outstanding plotlines with the Serenity movie in 2005. With rumors of a Firefly revival circulating online, fans are speculating about what could happen next.
Serenity was a strong enough movie that audiences could enjoy it even without the show for context. Some even viewed Firefly for their first time after the sequel movie. It remains a beloved franchise more than 20 years after airing, so here are 7 unanswered questions from the Serenity movie that a Firefly revival would need to address.

Does Mal Continue With His Existing Crew?
The Serenity movie featured the tragic deaths of two longtime characters in the series. Wash (Alan Tudyk), the pilot, died during the movie’s climactic final scene. Shepherd Book (Ron Glass) wasn’t always onboard Serenity during the Firefly series, but he was an important character. The Alliance kills him during the movie.
We know the Serenity ship is in full working order thanks to the film’s closing scenes. However, many questions remain unanswered about the crew. Does River (Summer Glau) become the new pilot? We briefly saw River take the ship’s controls, and she would be more than capable.
Alternatively, do Simon (Sean Maher) and Kaylee (Jewel Staite) wish to stay grounded for a while? The pair got their long-overdue happy ending in the movie, but Serenity would lose its engineer if Kaylee weren’t there.
If we ever got a Firefly revival, it would have an uphill battle introducing new characters to replace beloved originals, as they were all so unique and charming in their own ways.

What Happened To River Tam After The Truth About Miranda Was Exposed?
The truth about Miranda presumably sent shockwaves across the Verse, as it was the movie’s main plot. The Alliance unleashed a chemical agent called Pax on the planet’s population in an attempt to quell aggression.
The experiment went wrong. Most of the population died while the few survivors became Reavers. While the Alliance wasn’t specifically pursuing River for her knowledge of Miranda, we don’t know whether they’re continuing their hunt or intensifying it now.
River’s mental condition was also declining during the events of Serenity. We don’t know whether she improved or what the long-term implications of unveiling the Alliance’s most closely guarded secrets are.
There are countless glaring questions about River Tam’s future that another season of Firefly could explore.

Did People Across The Verse Believe The Recording About Miranda?
Mal’s (Nathan Fillion) guiding star in Serenity is to expose the Alliance’s dark secret about Miranda to the rest of the Verse. However, we never see if it had any impact or if viewers even believed what they saw.
Would the Alliance quickly scrub ‘the signal’ from existence, the best it could? Could they dismiss the existence of Pax and Miranda as an elaborate hoax to destabilize the peace? The topic is ripe for exploration and can even be compared to real life with our current-day AI-generated videos and deepfakes.
The Alliance won the war against the Independents, but we know there is tension in the universe. Would Alliance detractors be more willing to accept the recording at face value, while Alliance members may remain skeptical?
There are so many questions here, but the wrong answers could take away from the crew’s heroic actions in the film.

Did The Events Of Serenity Re-ignite A War Between The Alliance And Independents?
A large part of Mal’s disdain for the Alliance stems from his history as a Browncoat who fought against them in the Unification War. We’ve only seen glimpses of what that conflict looked like, but would the events of Serenity spark another conflict?
This question depends heavily on people across the Verse believing the Miranda message. A new series would have to reveal what is left of the Independent forces if this plot thread were explored.
If a war ensues, another question to answer is whether Mal would want a part in it? Would he have become an influential figure of sorts after the events of Serenity, or would he remain anonymous? There are so many smaller questions to answer about this topic that could shape the entire plot of a future series.

Did Shepherd Book Take All His Secrets To The Grave?
Shepherd Book tragically died during the movie, but he was among the most mysterious characters in the entire cast. His origins are only briefly touched upon in the movie.
When he reveals his knowledge about the Alliance to Mal, he exclaims, “It’s of interest to me how much you seem to know about that world.” Shepherd replies, “I wasn’t born a Shepherd, Mal,” before abruptly shutting down the conversation.
In the series, we also learn that Shepherd is adept with a gun. During one episode, the crew boarded a hostile ship to rescue Mal. Shepherd not only never missed a shot, but he also hit every opponent in the legs.
It would be disappointing if a new series glazed over Book’s past. Showrunners could leave him behind as an enigma, but he was a beloved part of Firefly.

What Will Humanity Do About The Reaver Threat?
Whether people across the Verse believe the Miranda message or not, the Reaver threat still exists. Firefly fans learned plenty about these wandering cannibalistic killers in the Serenity movie, but there’s much more to explore.
For example, we now know people became Reavers due to a chemical. Is the state reversible, or could there be a cure? Would humanity rally against the Reavers now that their origins are common knowledge?
Much about the Reavers was never explored during the Firefly series. In fact, they only briefly appeared in a single episode. Serenity revealed so much more about them and broadcast it across the galaxy. Would the fact that they were definitely people once change anything?
Reaver lore could also be expanded, as there are dozens of unexplained details. For example, we know they are brutal, frenzied savages, yet they can still pilot ships?
At the start of the movie, a classroom scene suggests that Alliance-schooled students do not even believe Reavers are real. A new series would have to explore if those beliefs have changed.

Did Mal And Inara Finally Have A Happy Ending?
Mal and Inara have a complicated relationship in the show. The Serenity movie condenses the key points down for a broad audience remarkably well, but the pair have conflicting beliefs and personalities.
The movie hints at a reconciliation between Mal and Inara. During the closing scenes, Mal asks, “You ready to get off this heap and back to a civilized life?” Inara warmly replies, “I don’t know.” Mal smiles and says, “Good answer.” It’s the perfect mushy Hollywood ending, but the question remains: how did they get on?
Fans of the series know the couple has a turbulent history despite their obvious connection. If Inara decided to stay on the ship, what would be her new role?
Many fans would agree that Mal deserves a happy ending, and Inara would likely play a major role in it. The big unanswered question a Firefly revival would have to explore is whether their relationship blossoms, or is doomed to failure.
