Reports have it that Google is planning an adjustment on its operating system landscape. ChromeOS seems to be the major aim. This was unveiled in the court documents from the US and Google antitrust case obtained by The Verge. According to the documents, Google plans to phase out ChromeOS completely by 2034, which is about eight years from now.

2034 will mark ten to eleven years Google launched its last major ChromeOS hardware platform (which was released in 2023). Google lawyers, according to a transcript from the case, explained that their client wanted to unify Android and ChromeOS into Aluminium OS. This is a single desktop operating system. It was in 2025 that this merger of ChromeOS and Android was confirmed by the President of the Android Ecosystem.

According to a new report, those who will get early access to Aluminium OS in late 2026 are the commercial trusted testers. Last week, a version of Aluminium OS surfaced, showing some of its design elements. Based on the leak, it will look like a mix of Android and ChromeOS.

The new OS is described as “ChromeOS built on the Android stack”. It’s obvious it will come with special privileges for first-party Google apps (like the Chrome browser). However, it’s expected that the wider rollout will take place in 2028.
