As Hindi cinema rides a wave of swagger-heavy heroes and brutality-forward storytelling, Kareena Kapoor Khan has voiced what many viewers have been feeling but few A-listers say out loud. In a moment of candour, the actor weighed in on the current taste for hyper-masculine, violence-led spectacles, and admitted she is craving scripts that bring back colour, romance, and stronger, more layered parts for women.

The conversation has gained steam in recent months as mainstream pop culture remains gripped by larger-than-life action titles and marketing that leans into “mass” adrenaline. Against that backdrop, Kareena’s remarks land as a clear push for variety in the kind of stories being mounted, and for women to be written with more agency than just serving as emotional anchors in male-driven worlds.

Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Latest Take On The Hyper-Masculine Trend

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, actor Kalyani Priyadarshan first framed the current phase as cyclical, arguing that audience preferences influence what the industry makes and sells. “Right now, I am going to call this a trend because I believe it’s a trend and it’s not going to last. But the trend has always been about spectacle. Every scene has to be sensational and shocking,” Kalyani said.

Kareena, agreeing with her, distilled the mood of today’s mainstream pipeline into one sharp line. “Now it’s all like thriller, crime, gore and blood and stuff. No fun, energy, colour, song, love or romance,” she said, adding that she is not getting enough scripts with meatier roles for women.

The comments do not come off as nostalgia for a bygone era as much as a plea for balance. Kareena’s point is simple: when every film is chasing the same grim tone and aggressive posture, mainstream cinema risks sidelining not just romance and music, but also quieter emotional beats and parts written with depth, especially for women.

Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Recent And Upcoming Work

Kareena has been deliberately mixing commercial big-ticket projects with performance-driven choices over the last few years. She headlined the Netflix thriller Jaane Jaan (2023), then returned to theatres with Crew (2024), a heist comedy co-starring Tabu and Kriti Sanon. She also led the investigative crime drama The Buckingham Murders (2024), and appeared in Rohit Shetty’s ensemble action film Singham Again (2024), led by Ajay Devgn.

Up next, Kareena is confirmed to star in Meghna Gulzar’s Daayra alongside Prithviraj Sukumaran. The film has been described as a gritty crime drama exploring crime, justice, and morality, and Kareena has previously called it a “dream team” collaboration.
