In the space of just eight years, Jio Studios has moved from breakout bets to full scale event cinema, and that climb has made it one of the most consequential banners in the current Hindi film conversation. Its recent run has not been powered by one signature formula, but by a slate that cuts across crowd pleasing horror comedy, rooted social drama, topical political thrillers and star driven action. That is what makes titles like Laapataa Ladies, Stree 2, Shaitaan and now Dhurandhar feel less like isolated wins and more like a carefully built identity.

That variety also reflects the larger identity Jio Studios has built, one that does not rely on a single genre, star formula or market trend. In comments carried by Forbes earlier this year, Jio Studios president Jyoti Deshpande said, “We’ve got more right than wrong and we want to continue on that trajectory and just win audience faith over a period of time. We want to tell responsible stories. We want to wow the consumers.”

A Winning Slate Across Genres And Scale

The strongest marker of Jio Studios’ recent momentum came through a 2024 slate that delivered both breadth and box office pull. Stree 2, directed by Amar Kaushik and produced with Maddock Films, emerged as one of the year’s biggest Hindi hits and reinforced the commercial value of franchise storytelling when backed by a clear tone and loyal audience base. Shaitaan, directed by Vikas Bahl and starring Ajay Devgn, R Madhavan and Jyotika, gave the studio a solid win in the supernatural thriller space. Article 370, fronted by Yami Gautam Dhar and directed by Aditya Suhas Jambhale, added a politically charged theatrical success to the line-up.

Then there was Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao, a smaller, rooted film that earned strong critical acclaim and sustained audience affection well beyond its theatrical run. The film became one of the clearest examples of Jio Studios backing storytelling with voice, texture and cultural recall, proving that a quieter film could leave a lasting footprint in a market often dominated by scale.

Dhurandhar Adds The Big Ticket Push

If the earlier run proved Jio Studios could balance commerce and content, Dhurandhar pushes the studio firmly into the high stakes event film space. The Aditya Dhar directorial stars Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, R Madhavan, Akshaye Khanna and Arjun Rampal, and has been mounted as a major action thriller from Jio Studios and B62 Studios. More importantly, the film signals the studio’s appetite for large format star driven storytelling that can travel as a theatrical event.

That broader arc is what gives Jio Studios’ eight year run its weight. Rather than repeat one winning pattern, the studio has built momentum through contrast, backing films with distinct tones, audiences and ambitions. In an industry that still struggles for consistency, that flexibility has become one of its clearest strengths.
