Samsung’s new app turns your earbuds into a motion sickness remedy. It is free, and Android users can start using it today. Here is why you should have this on your mobile device for your next big family road trip.
While I rarely get motion sickness from driving, it is a different case when I am on the passenger side of a vehicle with my eyes glued to my phone. It is a common inconvenience for many smartphone users, and even for those who don’t use one.
Apple and Google have introduced mobile features that can help prevent motion sickness while using a phone, but these are more about prevention than a cure. Samsung has now launched a new app that aims to reduce or even remedy motion sickness while you are traveling.
Your Earbuds Can Now Remedy Your Motion Sickness
The app, called Hearapy, has just launched on the Google Play Store and is available for Galaxy and other supported Android devices. While Samsung designed it to be paired with the Galaxy Buds Pro 4 and its ANC, the app should work well with any headphones or earbuds, even those without noise cancellation.
Essentially, the app plays a continuous sine wave precisely tuned to 100 kHz for 60 seconds, though there is a setting to adjust the duration to 120 seconds. By listening to this audio through your headphones, you help balance the vestibular system, which is associated with nerves and sensory organs responsible for detecting balance and motion. The audio helps alleviate the mismatch in system inputs that typically causes motion sickness, subsequently reducing nausea and other related symptoms.
“It only takes 60 seconds. No pills, no side effects. This solution impressively demonstrates how our innovations simplify and improve the lives of many people,” says Mario Winter, Vice President of Marketing for Samsung Electronics Germany. Samsung notes that the app’s function is based on technology developed from research at Nagoya University in Japan.
A Free App for Android Users
I tried the app on my Google Pixel 9 Pro XL, and it is very straightforward to use. Once you launch the app, you simply tap the center to start a session. However, make sure your earbuds are already connected before running it.
While I didn’t feel dizzy during my test, I had just arrived from an hour-long drive through mixed rural and urban environments in humid temperatures, so I knew my energy was slightly zapped. After the 60-second listening session, I felt a bit more relaxed, though I look forward to testing it when I actually experience motion sickness.
The Hearapy app is free on the Google Play Store, making it a great tool for on-the-go therapy to mitigate dizziness for yourself or someone traveling with you on your next trip.
