A suspect is in custody and another is still on the loose after a 7-month-old baby girl was killed by a stray bullet while being pushed in a stroller in Brooklyn, New York.
The incident took place on Humboldt and Moore streets around 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1. Officials said that 7-month-old Kaori Patterson-Moore was being pushed in a stroller by her mother when the shots were fired nearby.
After Kaori was hit, her father ran with her to the nearby Woodhull Hospital for treatment. She was pronounced dead soon after.
Police then launched a manhunt for two males believed to be involved in the shooting, who fled the scene in a moped. One of the suspects was wearing a white hoodie, while the other was wearing a black hoodie and appeared to be holding a gun.
Police managed to track down the moped about a mile away from the scene after they got into an accident.
Footage captured the moped crashing into an oncoming car at Manhattan Avenue and Siegel Street, and both men are thrown from the scooter. The man on the back of the moped landed so hard on the pavement that he lost both of his shoes, which police officers later recovered from the scene.
Workers at a nearby deli told ABC New York that the suspects’ firearm was flung into the street during the collision.
“It looks like it’s a gun. Yeah, a pistol, gun, something like that. Also, they left on the floor a couple of stuff, like a sandal,” Domingo Bonilla said. “I picked up the sandal and gave it to the police.”
Following the crash, the alleged gunman was taken by EMS to Brooklyn Hospital. Police said he is now in custody on an unrelated domestic violence-related robbery. However, detectives are working to determine his possible involvement in the shooting incident that took the 7-month-old’s life.
Police also added that the suspect — whose name has not been revealed — is known as a gang associate of the Marcy Houses. It’s also believed that the shooting was gang related.
Authorities have since released images of the suspects, adding that the second one they’re still looking for is “the subject of a massive NYPD manhunt.”
“All New York City police officers have a very clear picture of this outstanding suspect on their phones,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said during a press conference, per ABC New York. “In addition, NYPD bloodhounds are currently working to track his movements.”
Mayor Zohran Mamdani took to X to reflect on the tragedy, writing, “A 7-month-old baby was shot and killed today in Brooklyn — an unthinkable loss. I’m grateful for the hospital staff who did everything they could and the NYPD for their ongoing work to find those responsible for this heinous murder.”
“We cannot accept this violence as normal. Too many families have suffered this pain,” Mamdani concluded.
