Three-time Masters winner Phil Mickelson has had a devoted family by his side since before he rose to fame more than 30 years ago, so it’s no surprise that he would prioritize those who love him most over his golf career.
Mickelson announced in April 2026 that he would withdraw from the 2026 Masters and miss an “extended period of time” to deal with a family matter, just days before the tournament was set to begin.
“Unfortunately, I will not play in the Masters Tournament next week and will be out for an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter,” he wrote via Instagram. “I have great respect for Augusta National Golf Club and it is definitely the most special week of the year.”
He added, “I wish everyone the best of luck and will be watching.”

Phil Mickelson met his wife, Amy McBride, in 1992, the same year he turned pro. McBride was a Phoenix Suns cheerleader at the time and a junior at Arizona State University. They married in 1996 and she has been present for all three of her husband’s Masters wins, including in 2010 while she was battling cancer.
“I am so appreciative to have Amy as my partner in life,” Mickelson wrote via Instagram in 2018 to celebrate the couple’s 22nd anniversary. “Her grace, charm, kindness, laugh, smile, and brilliance have made me the luckiest man in the world. Thank you, my love, for sharing our lives together.”
Phil Mickelson Sr.
Even at 90 years old, Phil Mickelson Sr. remains a devoted supporter of his son on the golf course and, as of 2024, was an active golfer himself.
Phil Jr. poked some fun at his dad in a humorous post via X in 2024, showing his then-89-year-old dad mowing the lawn.
“My dad, 89-years-old, mowing the lawn,” he said in the video. “I should probably go help him.”

Like Phil Mickelson Sr., Mary Mickelson, the golf pro’s mother, has followed her son across the country to cheer him throughout his career. A San Diego native and former basketball player, Mary is also a breast cancer survivor.
Amanda Mickelson
Phil Mickelson and Amy McBride welcomed their eldest daughter, Amanda, in 1999, one day after Mickelson finished second in the U.S. Open.
“What Phil and I feel about having a child when you are with the right person — it was such an amazing moment as a couple,” Amy said at the time, according to Essentially Sports. “Such a beautiful, bonding moment. I remember never feeling anything close to that in my life.”
Amanda keeps a low profile today, but attended Brown University, where she studied Egyptology.
Sophia Mickelson
The Mickelsons’ middle child, Sophia, was born in 2001. Like her sister, she stays out of the public eye — but also like her sister, she has an Ivy League education. Sophia studied architecture at Columbia University, but also has a background in performance. She made her acting debut in the 2019 film Ruta Madre.
Evan Mickelson
The youngest Mickelson child, Evan, was born in 2003. A year later, Phil Mickelson recounted his son’s harrowing birth, where he said Evan stopped breathing for seven minutes.
“I didn’t really get into it too much, but Amy had a very dangerous delivery with the birth of Evan,” he told ESPN. “He had a very difficult delivery, too. He didn’t breathe for seven minutes, and had the emergency nurses not been there with the equipment ready, he might have had some severe brain damage or other circumstances. They had to stop a six-inch tear in a major artery, or I would have been without my wife.”
Evan and Amy both pulled through, and though Evan is a casual golfer, he is not pursuing the sport professionally.
