As part of a plea deal he’s expected to accept during a hearing set for Wednesday, April 8, suspected Long Island Serial Killer Rex Heuermann will be expected to give a full accounting of all seven murders he has been charged with committing, sources have exclusively confirmed to Us Weekly.
Heuermann, the hulking New York architect who was arrested in 2023 and charged with three of the infamous Gilgo Beach murders, has since been linked to four more victims. Until now, he has publicly denied having any involvement with the seven murders.
But on Wednesday, prior to changing his plea to guilty, Heuermann will be asked to provide details about each of the murders before the judge, the victims’ families, and any onlookers who managed to secure a seat inside the gallery.
Last month, relatives of some of Heuermann’s alleged victims were informed by prosecutors the 62-year-old would be amending his original plea, bringing a close to one of the most morbid chapters in Long Island’s history.
Heuermann’s allocution, sources said, will be much like the one that was offered by BTK Killer Dennis Rader in 2005, when he pleaded guilty to the murders of 10 people. Newsday first reported last month that Heuermann would be changing his plea. However, neither Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney nor Heuermann’s defense attorney, Michael J. Brown, have confirmed the anticipated plea change.
If he does, in fact, amend his plea this week, Heuermann would be sentenced at a later date.
Heuermann, who was married and has two adult children, was arrested in July 2023 outside his Manhattan office in connection to three of the Gilgo Beach murders. (His wife, Asa Ellerup, filed for divorce weeks after Heuermann’s arrest.)
Heuermann has since been charged with the murders of Valerie Mack, 24; Jessica Taylor, 20; Megan Waterman, 22; Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25; Sandra Costilla, 28; and Amber Lynn Costello, 27.
He has pleaded not guilty to all seven murder charges.
Sources further confirmed that Heuermann will also confess to killing an eighth Gilgo Beach victim whom they had not previously charged him with murdering. Meanwhile, a child of one of his alleged victims has also filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Heuermann and his family.
Investigators spent weeks at Heuermann’s house, collecting evidence, including a stockpile of guns.
Heuermann is being held at the Riverhead Correctional Facility. A New York State Supreme Court judge said that he is aiming for Heuermann to face trial for all seven homicide charges in September.
