Deleting a message in Google Messages only to realise later you still need it can be a headache. There’s no way to retrieve a message once it’s deleted like Gmail, so you have to be extra careful when freeing space in your inbox. Google thought of this too and is working on a new change to make retrieving deleted messages less of a hassle.

Google is adding a safety net in Google Messages on Android that will keep deleted messages around for 30 days before they are totally wiped from the device. You’ll be able to retrieve deleted messages with the introduced Trash folder within 30 days after the messages are deleted. After 30 days, the messages will be completely erased. The feature is already rolling out in the stable release of the app with version 20260327_00_RC00.
To try this new feature, you’ll have to update your apps and phone. Android users will find the new Trash folder under the profile section. By heading into the Trash folder, you’ll gain access to all deleted messages. When you click on a message in this folder, there will be an option to recover the conversation, which will place the message back into the main folder.
Android Go users get a more limited timeframe with Trash items sticking around for just 7 days, unlike regular Android users. They still have to update the app to get the feature. Users will love this new feature. Small refinements like this make Google Messages feel more complete to use.
