The seven deadly sins in Islam are among the most serious and destructive sins that a Muslim must avoid. These major sins not only harm a person’s faith but can also lead to severe consequences in this life and the Hereafter.

Islam clearly warns believers against these actions and provides guidance to stay away from them.

Seven of the most Destructive Sins Every Muslim Must Avoid

It was narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Avoid the seven deadly sins that doom one to Hell…”

“…Associating others with Allah (Shirk), practicing magic, killing a soul whom Allah has forbidden killing, consuming Interest (Riba), consuming the property of orphans, fleeing on the day of the march (to the battlefield), and slandering chaste women.”

(An-Nisai)

1. Associating others with Allah (Shirk)

Shirk is the greatest sin in Islam. It means associating partners with Allah, which is strictly forbidden.

Allah says in the Quran:

“Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly gone far astray.”

– (Al-Quran 4:116)

The Prophet ﷺ  said,

“It is hoped that Allah may forgive every sin, except in the case of one who dies a polytheist…”

(Abu Dawud)

This highlights the severity of this sin and why every Muslim must avoid it at all costs.

2. Practicing Sihr (Magic)

Sihr (magic) is a major sin in Islam and involves seeking help from evil forces or devils. It leads a person away from faith and reliance on Allah.

Allah says:

And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people sihr and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut.

But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, “We are a trial, so do not disbelieve (by practicing sihr).
”And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah .

And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the sihr would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew.

– (Al-Quran 2:102)

Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said,
“Avoid the destructive sins (Mubiqat), i.e., shirk and witchcraft (Magic).”

– (Bukhari)

This shows that practicing magic is a dangerous sin that leads a person away from faith and towards destruction.

3. Taking a life unjustly

Taking a life unjustly is one of the gravest sins in Islam. Human life is sacred, and harming an innocent person is strictly forbidden.

Allah says in the Quran:

“….Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land – it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely…”

– (Al-Quran 5:32)

This shows the immense value of human life in Islam and the severe consequences of taking it unjustly.

4. Consuming Interest (Riba)

Riba (interest) is strictly prohibited in Islam as it leads to injustice, exploitation, and imbalance in society.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) cursed the one who consumes interest, the one who pays it, the one who records it, and the witnesses to it, and said: “They are all equal.”

(Musilm)

Allah says:

“Those who consume interest cannot stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity. That is because they say, “Trade is (just) like interest.” But Allah has permitted trade and has forbidden interest.”

– (Al-Quran 2:275)

This shows that riba is a major sin that corrupts society and brings severe consequences in this world and the Hereafter.

5. Consuming the Wealth of an Orphan

Consuming the wealth of an orphan is a grave sin in Islam. Orphans are among the most vulnerable in society, and Islam strongly emphasizes protecting their rights and property.

Allah says:

“And do not approach the property of an orphan, except in the way that is best, until he reaches maturity.”

– (Al-Quran 17:34)

“Indeed, those who devour the property of orphans unjustly are only consuming into their bellies fire. And they will be burned in a Blaze.”

– (Al-Quran 4:10)

These verses clearly show the severe warning against exploiting orphans and highlight the importance of justice and care towards them.

6. Fleeing the battlefield

Fleeing from the battlefield during a just and lawful fight is considered a major sin in Islam, as it shows weakness in faith and can harm the entire community.

Allah says:

“O you who have believed, when you meet those who disbelieve advancing [for battle], do not turn to them your backs [in flight]. And whoever turns his back to them on such a day… has certainly returned with anger [upon him] from Allah, and his refuge is Hell – and wretched is the destination.”

– (Al-Quran 8:15-16)

This highlights the seriousness of standing firm in times of difficulty and the severe consequences of turning away in such critical moments.

7. Accusing a Chaste Woman of Adultery

Falsely accusing chaste women without clear proof is a major sin in Islam that damages honor, spreads corruption, and harms society.

Allah says:

“And those who accuse chaste women and then do not produce four witnesses – lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept from them testimony ever after. And those are the defiantly disobedient,”
“Except for those who repent thereafter and reform, for indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”

– (Al-Quran 24:4-5)

This shows how Islam strictly protects the honor and dignity of individuals and warns against making false accusations.

Conclusion

The seven deadly sins in Islam are not ordinary mistakes — they are major sins that can destroy a person’s faith and lead to severe consequences in the Hereafter. Every Muslim should be aware of them and sincerely strive to avoid them.

By understanding these sins and following the guidance of the Quran and Sunnah, we can protect our faith, strengthen our character, and live a righteous life.

May Allah protect us from these sins, forgive our shortcomings, and guide us on the straight path. May He grant us sincere repentance and keep our hearts firm upon the truth. Ameen.
