Netflix is the biggest streaming service in the world, so it’s no surprise that the platform has had some of the biggest new releases of 2026 so far. Netflix had the year’s first true straight-to-streaming blockbuster with The Rip, the new Miami-set crime thriller starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The film spent weeks atop streaming charts before it finally gave up its crown to War Machine, the big-budget sci-fi smash starring Reacher’s Alan Ritchson. After already racking up over 125 million views during its first few weeks on the platform, War Machine has become the biggest Netflix movie of 2026. Another big Netflix release this year was The Immortal Man, the Peaky Blinders spin-off film starring Cillian Murphy opposite Rebecca Ferguson and Barry Keoghan.
Netflix usually has a few big releases each month, and one of its biggest projects of the entire year is releasing this weekend in Apex. The new action-adventure thriller is now streaming on Netflix around the world, and with stars like Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton at the helm, it’s expected to be in contention for one of Netflix’s most successful films of 2026. The review embargo for Apex lifted yesterday evening, and at the time of writing, the film holds a 66% from critics on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. Collider’s Robert Brian Taylor gave the film a 6/10 in his review, praising Apex’s cinematography and Charlize Theron’s performance while critiquing its basic characters. ScreenRant’s 4/10 review from Grant Hermanns was much harsher — he went as far as to call it a “mundane survival thriller that bumps the brakes too often.” Mark Keizer also reviewed the film at a 4/10 clip for MovieWeb, and while he did praise Theron’s performance, he called it nothing more than “an assembly-line thriller.”

What Is ‘Apex’ About?
Apex follows Sasha (Charlize Theron, a woman who seeks solace in the wilderness, only to find herself in a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the psychopathic Ben (Taron Egerton). Eric Bana, who recently starred in the Netflix original thriller that’s been renewed for Season 2, Untamed, also has a role in Apex, along with Matt Whelan, Bessie Holland, and Aaron Pederson. Baltasar Kormákur directed Apex with a script from Jeremy Robbins. Kormákur recently helmed the 2022 Idris Elba-led thriller, Beast, which is also streaming on Netflix.
