Windrose isn’t just the name of the survival game that’s currently doing so well on Steam. It’s also the name of an Italian metal band, which is why players are ending up in their subreddit.
Okay, let’s start with a little quiz: Is Windrose the name…
A) … of an Italian metal band?
or
B) … a pirate survival game that was just released in Early Access on Steam?
You’re right, of course—both answers are correct (well, almost; the band’s name is actually Wind Rose). The multiplayer survival game Windrose has been available in Early Access on Steam since April 14 and has already gained many fans: 87 percent of Steam reviews are positive, and at times there were over 200,000 players online simultaneously.
The band Wind Rose has also achieved impressive success: The musicians perform throughout Europe and the U.S., and the music video for their hit Diggy Diggy Hole
has racked up 72 million views on YouTube.
On Reddit, the shared name is now causing confusion—and happy coincidences. Fans of the pirate game keep ending up in the band’s subreddit.
Pirates Wanted, Music Found
The mistake made by many buccaneers can’t be explained solely by a lack of navigational skills. Rather, a name change is causing difficulties: Because Windrose (the game) used to be called Crosswind, and the subreddit is still called r/crosswind today. On the other hand, anyone who simply types “Windrose” into the search bar can easily end up at the band’s page.
The metal band’s subreddit therefore now makes it clear in its description:
This subreddit is about the band Wind Rose, not the recently renamed game Windrose.
At the time of the release, however, a few “pirate ships” still docked at Wind Rose, wanting to discuss the survival game. Posts are therefore alreadydrawing attention to the mix-up. For some players, however, this is a stroke of luck. For example, Interested Scroller:
I found this subreddit while searching for the game Windrose. Now I’m listening to Wind Rose while playing Windrose. Sometimes the internet is pretty cool.
It seems other players discovered the band the same way:
Yeah man, I came here for the pirate game and now I’m listening to Diggy Diggy Hole on YouTube. Perfect music to play the game or Valheim to.
Wind Rose actually has a connection to a completely different game, namely Deep Rock Galactic. The musicians are big fans of dwarves and like to take the stage wearing armor, axes, and full beards. In 2024, they released the song “Rock and Stone” in an official collaboration with the developers of the co-op shooter, named after the motto of Deep Rock Galactic.
