Stranger Than Heaven Gameplay
Intense street fights that revolve around melee combat act as one pillar of Stranger Than Heaven’s gameplay, at least going by its reveal trailer, which sees its protagonist, Makoto Daito, using his fists and melee weapons to dispatch many a foe.
The blows look quite impactful from the trailer alone and, quite interestingly, we’ll control Makoto’s left and right sides independently to chain different attacks, some of which stagger or pin down foes, but all of which hurt.
In addition, blocking enemy strikes with one hand while “instantly countering” with the other is also possible, promising a reactive combat system that rewards reading our opponents’ moves.
When Makoto’s fists aren’t enough, he can turn to melee weapons such as knives, hammers, and katanas for even more ruthless violence.
In addition to being a capable fighter, Makoto also has a talent for music, which we’ll experience firsthand as we help him produce “a wide variety of incredible acts” alongside original tracks.
“In order to get these shows off the ground, Makoto must gather rumors from the streets and use them to scout skilled singers and performers,” the developer explains on the game’s Steam page.
“He can then head out into town to create new music –collecting any and every sound he can find: the swish of a broom, snoring of a sleepy neighbor, the rumble of passing trains, distant animal cries, even the grunts and growls of the enemies he fights.”
These sounds can be combined into original tracks, but that’s just one step of putting a show together, as he also needs to “choose the setlist, arrange the band, assign a cast, and design the production – from lighting colors to staging – all in an effort to bring each show to life.”**
Stranger Than Heaven Story
Stranger Than Heaven’s story follows Makoto Daito, a young boy who experiences persecution because of his Asian heritage, prompting him to leave San Francisco by sneaking aboard a ship.
Having lost both his parents, he sets off to Japan, the birthplace of his mother, where he seeks to forge a new life for himself.
His journey spans 50 years, seeing him venturing across five cities from 1915’s Kokura, Fukuoka, home to a large foundry, to 1929’s port town of Kure, Hiroshima, 1943’s Minami, Osaka, 1951’s Atami, Shizuoka and, finally, 1965’s Shinjuku, Tokyo, described as “Japan’s most iconic pleasure district—a city of swirling and unpredictable chaos.”
Stranger Than Heaven’s story delves deep into Makoto’s internal struggles, those of the colorful figures he meets along the way, while also highlighting the distinct nature of each of its five cities.
