Despite the vast number of options as anime’s popularity continues to skyrocket in the West, Crunchyroll appears to have settled into its role as the streaming service of choice for veteran and hardcore anime fans. A fierce streaming war has been ongoing between several of the largest names in the industry, and while many services have bolstered their own anime lineups, few can compare with the overwhelming number of titles currently available on Crunchyroll.
Of them, there is a growing number of classics from decades now romanticized by generations of anime fans who never had the chance to experience them. Alongside currently airing smash-hits, viewers can return to legends like the many Mobile Suit Gundam entries, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Dragon Ball, and so many more.

Are you an anime sensei — or still on episode one?
Crunchyroll’s lengthy and ever-growing selection of classics is also beneficial for another reason. Though some shows have aged gracefully and remain popular among newer anime fans, others have slowly faded from relevance, and their availability on a major streaming service helps to introduce them to viewers who otherwise would have been blissfully unaware. Now, anime fans have a chance to dive into one of those underappreciated gems.
Kodocha Has Been Added to Crunchyroll
An Underrated ’90s Gem Is Now Available to Stream for the First Time
Kodocha anime’s main character and a woman with a mushroom and squirrel on her head.
1996’s Kodocha, produced by Studio Gallop and based on the manga by Miho Obana, is a shoujo comedy drama that checks all the boxes of its respective genres and target audience. Its typical slice of life elements are often juxtaposed with surprisingly mature storybeats and subject matter, leading to a mostly lighthearted viewing experience that also has no reservations about getting a little serious, without talking down to its typically younger audience, when the moment calls for it.
The series follows Sana Kurata, an elementary school-aged child actress attending a class filled with overly-energetic, downright chaotic students. She intends to reform her unruly classroom, led by a boy named Akito Hayama. Expectedly, the two clash in nearly every aspect, but as time goes on, they form an evolving and further understanding relationship with one another.
30 Must-Watch Anime Series For Adult Fans
Sometimes, adult anime fans can exhausted with high school romances and teenage leads. Thankfully, there are plenty of shows for older fans.
It is through the lens of these child characters that Kodocha tackles difficult real-world social issues, capturing just how those unequipped to deal with such struggle find a way to do so, and how those struggles eventually shape them. While the series was a success during its initial run, it eventually fell victim to localization and distribution issues that plagued countless anime titles from the time period. Only its first season was dubbed in English, and both the manga and anime spent nearly two decades out of print in the United States.
Fortunately, Diskotek Media secured the licensing for Kodocha in 2020 for Blu-ray release. Now, as of May 2026, Kodocha with original Japanese audio is available in its entirety on Crunchyroll. Because the English dub was never finished, likely leading to some rights issues, the series is not available to watch in English.
Streaming Has Been Both Helpful and Harmful to Anime Preservation
Crunchyroll’s Hime wearing a crown
While adding shows like Kodocha to Crunchyroll is undeniably good for the preservation of classic anime that hasn’t quite retained its popularity, streaming has also been somewhat harmful to the very same cause. Just as Kodocha was added, a number of shows, including Claymore and the more recent 86: EIGHTY-SIX, have disappeared from Crunchyroll without warning, leaving fans no legal method of streaming either series.
There are positives and negatives to streaming services fighting with one another to secure as many anime titles as possible, though as long as licenses expire and rights issues continue to plague shows from decades ago, fans will need to remain vigilant about the status of whether their favorite titles are currently available to watch.
