Sheikh Sami Dewli, one of the Muadhins of Masjid an-Nabawi (Prophet’s Mosque), has passed away. His funeral prayer was held on 22 May 2026 and was led by Sheikh Abdullah Al Quraafi — his first time leading such a prayer at the mosque.

The announcement opening the prayer, ‘الصلاة على الرجل يرحمكم الله’, was a traditional form not commonly heard today, one that many noted with warmth at the occasion.

About Sheikh Dewli

Sheikh Dewli was born in 1374 AH (1954/55 CE) in Madinah, where he spent his entire life, eventually earning a PhD in comparative Fiqh.

The Adhan was never merely a role for him — it was a family inheritance. His family had served as Muadhins at Masjid an-Nabawi (Prophet’s Mosque) across generations, and he began practising the call to prayer as young as six or seven years old.

As a child, he would climb the minarets of the mosque, though he was not yet old enough to call the Adhan officially. He practised at other mosques in the city, including the historic Masjid Quba’.

First Adhan at the Prophet’s Mosque

His first Adhan at Masjid an-Nabawi (Prophet’s Mosque) came in 1974, not through a formal appointment but through circumstance.

The scheduled Muadhin was absent, and Sheikh Dewli was asked whether he was ready. He said yes, switched on the microphones, and called the Isha Adhan — a moment that marked the beginning of a lifelong service.

He called the Adhan again in 1400 AH (1980) and was formally appointed as a Muadhin of the Haram in 1402 AH (1982), a position he held for decades.
