How freedom can transform into dread in 2 months or less
I knew this wasn’t the dream.
I didn’t quit my job and started freelancing because I wanted to work longer hours, feel guilty when I was not “being productive,” or end every week wondering why I was exhausted, yet somehow still behind.
But I was not alone with these feelings. In fact, that’s where a lot of independent professionals end up.
At first, it feels like freedom. No boss. No commute. No pointless meetings.
But then slowly — sometimes subtly — you become the boss you used to resent. You create your own toxic work culture. And before you know it, you’ve turned the thing you once saw as your escape into a self-imposed prison.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: freelancing can burn you out faster than any 9–5.
And the worst part? You’ll blame yourself, not the broken system you unknowingly recreated.
But burnout is not the only destination of this journey. You can do much better than I did and actually get to the promised neverland of freelancing — if you are careful about it.
