The YRF Spy Universe is one of Bollywood’s biggest franchises, but it seems not every actor has had a smooth ride. In a shocking new interview, actor Ranvir Shorey has pulled back the curtain on his experience playing RAW agent Gopi Arya. Fans loved Gopi in Ek Tha Tiger for his serious and dependable nature, but many were left confused by his character’s arc in the sequels. Now, Shorey has confirmed what many suspected: he was unhappy with the journey and revealed that he only returned for the third installment due to some serious drama behind the scenes.
The Shocking Pay Cut Revelation
One of the biggest bombshells from Shorey’s interview was about his salary. He revealed that when YRF approached him for the second film, Tiger Zinda Hai, they actually reduced his fee. This is highly unusual for a successful franchise. “They called me for Tiger Zinda Hai and they cut my money,” Shorey stated. When he questioned the decision, the production house apparently told him that due to the film’s massive budget, pay cuts were being made across the board. This revelation gives a surprising glimpse into the business side of blockbuster filmmaking.
Gopi’s Journey From Serious Spy To ‘Clown’
Beyond the financial issues, Shorey expressed deep creative disappointment with how his character was handled. He felt that the respectable agent he portrayed in the first film was slowly turned into a joke. “My character Gopi in Ek Tha Tiger was a serious, respectable character. By the third part, he has become a clown, a caricature,” he lamented. This feeling was shared by many audience members who missed the original dynamic Gopi shared with Salman Khan’s Tiger. For an actor, seeing a beloved character lose their depth can be incredibly frustrating.
Why Ranvir Shorey Did Tiger 3 ‘Out of Spite’
Given the pay cut and creative issues, why did he return for Tiger 3? The answer is pure spite. Shorey admitted that he was initially going to refuse the role in the third film. However, he had a change of heart, deciding that if the makers were determined to reduce his character, he would see it through to the end. “Then I thought that if this is what you have reduced my character to, then take this only,” he explained. Despite his frustrations, Shorey did give credit to director Maneesh Sharma for giving him a respectful farewell from the franchise, suggesting Gopi Arya’s story is now officially over.
