iOS 26’s Liquid Glass design has hit a snag that Apple definitely didn’t anticipate: it’s causing vertigo for many users. Since the update dropped, iPhone users have been reporting a bizarre optical illusion where app icons appear crooked or tilted in dark mode, with some experiencing genuine dizziness and eye strain.
The issue stems from Liquid Glass’s lighting effects, which create highlights around icon edges. Against dark backgrounds, this creates what’s essentially a digital version of the “Cafe Wall Illusion,” where straight lines appear tilted. Reddit users have called it an “optical nightmare,” with some reporting actual iOS 26 vertigo from the effect.
The problem gets worse with pure black wallpapers and when using “Dark,” “Clear,” or “Tinted” icon themes. Colorful backgrounds tend to mask the illusion by drawing attention away from the problematic corners.
This issue adds to iOS 26’s rocky launch. Apple has been quietly scaling back Liquid Glass effects throughout beta testing after readability complaints. Now that iOS 26 is available for download, millions more users are experiencing these issues firsthand.
Not everyone sees the tilting effect, which explains why it wasn’t caught during beta testing. The illusion depends on specific wallpaper and lighting combinations.
If you’re affected, head to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size and enable “Reduce Transparency.” You can also switch to colorful wallpapers or default icon themes to minimize the effect.
Apple hasn’t acknowledged the iOS 26 vertigo reports yet, but given their history of tweaking Liquid Glass, expect adjustments in future updates.
