Madame Web is leaving Netflix on November 14, and it’s safe to say the internet won’t be mourning this loss. The movie was supposed to kick off a new chapter in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, but instead, it became one of the biggest superhero disasters in recent memory. The marketing made it seem like an action-packed Spider-Women team-up, but fans quickly realized all the action scenes had already been shown in the trailer. What was left was a plothole-filled story with wooden performances and awkward pacing that never managed to find its tone. Even Dakota Johnson, the movie’s lead star, couldn’t hide her disappointment and openly poked fun at the film during its press tour.
The film will now be leaving right before the holidays, per What’s on Netflix. Overall, the film’s reception was brutal. On Rotten Tomatoes, for instance, critics gave it a painfully low 10% rating, too. The audience score hit 53%, but most of that came from Sydney Sweeney fans and people joking around with ironic praise. One review even said, “Loved the part where Madame Web says ‘it’s webbin time!’” which sums up how little the movie was taken seriously.
Things didn’t go much better at the box office either. The movie grossed around $100.5 million worldwide, which sounds fine until you realize it cost $80-100 million to make, not including marketing expenses. There was so much wrong with it. A lot of Tahar Rahim’s dialogue was clearly ADR’d, and in some scenes, his lips didn’t match what he was saying. The awkward attempts to connect the story to Spider-Man felt extremely forced. Not to forget that Madame Web defeats Ezekiel twice in the most random ways, once by hitting him with a taxi, then later with an ambulance. Fans who went in expecting a thrilling superhero story clearly walked out feeling disappointed.
The SSU Is Dead and Fading Into Obscurity
After the failures of Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven, Sony confirmed that the SSU has been put on an indefinite hold. El Muerto and Hypno Hustle, which were scheduled to come next, have been canceled. And now, with these movies even being dropped from streaming platforms, the SSU is fading into complete obscurity. After November 14, there’s no word on where Madame Web will stream next. Not even Disney+, which has all the Marvel movies along with Venom and Morbius, has picked it up.
Madame Web is available to stream on Netflix until November 14, 2025. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates!
