Jerry O’Donnell — best known to Bosch fans for his role as Sgt. John Mankiewicz (or Mank, to his buddies) across the show’s acclaimed run — is officially stepping away from Hollywood after the Prime Video franchise wrapped earlier this year. At 65, O’Donnell has traded scripts for squats, committing to police academy training with the Asheville Police Department in North Carolina.
And according to APD officials, he’s not just the oldest recruit in decades — he may be the oldest the department has ever seen. But for O’Donnell, the decision wasn’t about age. It was about purpose. Speaking with a local news outlet, he explained that the grueling physical training has become a welcome challenge, one that embodies the sense of service he’s been chasing since his years in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division:
“When we do PT, we go on these runs in the parking garage — you run up, run down, run the parking garage. And then you do exercises — 15 air squats, run up another level. Do 50 push ups, run up another level. Do 50 burpees.”
For O’Donnell, finishing each day exhausted is the point, because it gives you an idea of what sacrifice should be about.
“I always think when you slide into home at the end of your life, you want to be all used up. You know — dirty, scarred up, a little bloody, and spent.”
That mindset, he says, comes from gratitude.
“I feel blessed and grateful to still have some ability, so you know, that’s like a sense of purpose — to be of service.”
Who Is Jerry O’Donnell?
O’Donnell’s résumé is filled with law enforcement roles: Bosch, Dexter, Mad Men, SEAL Team, Without a Trace, N.Y.P.D. Blue, JAG, and more. But this marks the first time he’ll step into the job for real. APD spokesperson Rick Rice says O’Donnell’s age makes him a true outlier. Most recruits are in their 20s or early 30s — but he also notes O’Donnell’s discipline and attitude have already earned respect inside the program.
Prime Video’s Bosch concluded its flagship series in 2021, followed by Bosch: Legacy, which wrapped in April 2025 after three seasons. The universe continues with Ballard — starring Maggie Q as detective Renée Ballard. Stay tuned to Collider for updates on the Bosch universe.
