In a rare coincidence in cinema that feels almost poetic, Ahan Shetty, son of Bollywood icon Suniel Shetty, has officially started filming Border 2 in Pune on Father’s Day, 2025.
The occasion is not only significant on a personal level but is also a moment when cinematic history comes full circle. Ahan is now stepping onto a film — not just any film, but a legacy — one which his father built with his depiction of a soldier in J.P. Dutta’s Border, originally released in 1997.
Border Then and Now: From Suniel to Ahan
The original Border was based on the famous Battle of Longewala during the 1971 India-Pakistan war and still holds cult status today. Anyone who went to the movie theatre in the late ’90s remembers Suniel Shetty as Bhairon Singh, the brave soldier in his iconic performance.
Almost 30 years later, son follows father — Ahan Shetty now steps into a new version with Border 2 — a film that will expand the world beyond the first but still be rooted in the original film’s toughness, emotionality, and scale.
Extensive Training and Actual Soldier Preparation
According to sources in the industry, Ahan has been undergoing physical and combat training, similar to that of his father, for his new role.
The upcoming film will reportedly demonstrate both the raw tactical behaviours of war and the moral and emotional struggles of a soldier — thus adding a timely, complex narrative to the franchise.
A source close to Ahan shared:
“Ahan has had months to prepare for this role, with a focus on building stamina, weapon handling, and how the military’s ranking works. This character isn’t just physical, it’s about serving with duty and honour.”
A New Generation, Same Courage
As of now, there are few plot details available, although Border 2 is reportedly going to be about a new group of soldiers, with Ahan Shetty as one of the soldiers leading from the front.
The film appears to have a strong ensemble cast, expected to be announced soon, with JP Dutta’s production house backing the film — rooted in legacy and authenticity.
The film will explore the personal lives of the soldiers, the brotherhood that is formed, decisions made, and hopes to appeal to all segments of fans, as well as a new-age audience raised on nuance and nationalism.
