Nestled in the serene village of Ananthapura in Kerala’s Kasaragod district, the Ananthapura Lake Temple stands as a rare and spiritually significant shrine dedicated to Anantha Padmanabhaswamy. This unique temple, built in the middle of a tranquil freshwater lake, is the only one of its kind in Kerala, offering devotees a truly distinctive pilgrimage experience.
A Unique Temple in the Middle of a Lake
What sets this temple apart is its remarkable location—right at the center of a rectangular lake spanning approximately two acres. Surrounded by clear spring-fed waters, the temple structure is accessible only via a narrow footbridge that connects the sanctum (Sreekovil) to the mainland.

Spiritual Significance and Beliefs
The temple holds immense importance in Vaishnavite tradition and is considered one among the 108 Abhimana Kshethrams. According to belief, it is the Moolasthanam (original seat) of the deity worshipped at the famous Padmanabhaswamy Temple.
A fascinating legend states that the deity traveled from this very location to Thiruvananthapuram through an underground cave situated near the temple lake, linking both sacred sites spiritually.
The Legend of Divakara Muni Vilwamangalam
The temple’s origin is deeply rooted in mythology. It is believed that the revered sage Divakara Muni Vilwamangalam performed intense penance here.
One day, Lord Vishnu appeared before him in the form of a radiant young boy. The sage allowed the child to stay, under the condition that he would never be mistreated. However, unable to tolerate the boy’s playful mischief, the sage lost his temper. Hurt by this, the divine child disappeared, revealing that he could be found in Ananthankat.
Realizing his mistake, the sage followed the path through a cave, eventually witnessing a divine vision of Lord Vishnu reclining on the serpent Anantha—a form now worshipped as Anantha Padmanabha.
Structure and Idol
The temple showcases traditional Kerala-style architecture with exquisite wooden carvings depicting scenes from the Dashavatara (ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu). The ceilings of the mandapam are adorned with detailed artwork, while the Navagrahas are beautifully painted within the complex.
Originally, the idol of Lord Vishnu was crafted using a rare herbal mixture known as kadu-sharkara-yogam, composed of over 70 medicinal substances. In 1972, it was replaced with a Panchaloha (five-metal) idol, though efforts are ongoing to restore the original form.
The deity is depicted in a seated posture on the five-hooded serpent Anantha, symbolizing divine protection and cosmic balance.
The Legend of Babiya – The Temple Crocodile
Adding to the temple’s mystique is the story of Babiya, a crocodile that lived peacefully in the temple lake. Unlike typical crocodiles, Babiya was believed to be vegetarian, surviving solely on temple offerings and never harming humans.
After Babiya’s death in 2022, a new crocodile appeared in 2023, displaying similar calm and non-aggressive behavior—considered by devotees as a divine continuation of the temple’s miracle.
