You might have missed it, but recent research indicated that anime is on the rise with the growing Gen-Z generation. Google, however, was probably on to that trend for a while, which would explain why the platform made the surprise announcement that it is releasing a new series of anime shorts for Google Play. With the anime-friendly title Becoming Overpowered With Google Play?! Reincarnated as an Android User, the series will roll out episodes monthly, and the first one is already available to stream for free.
The story will follow Andō (voiced by Daiki Yamashita), a young and talented gamer who is surprised one day when he goes to sleep and wakes up on Google Play World — a whole new place where his gaming skills will come in handy. In order to help him get through the mission he was thrown into, Andō will find and use an Android phone, which angers the new gaming community he finds. The first short episode shows that Google Play World is a colorful location with details on every corner — which evokes a bit of a feel of the Oscar-winning animated movie Logorama.
“Short” is a precise definition for the series — each episode will be about 15 seconds long. However, its duration doesn’t mean that there is great talent involved in bringing each section to life. The anime series is directed by Yasuhiro Akamatsu, who previously held several episodes of Attack on Titan. Additionally, Inu-Oh! co-director Masaaki Yuasa collaborated on the series’ visual concepts. If you watched Inu-Oh! and Devilman Crybaby, you will quickly realize that the filmmaker is certainly an important addition to the team.
Wit Studios Brings Google Anime To Life
The Google Play anime series is brought to life by Wit Studios, who previously worked on high-profile titles such as the first three seasons of Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga, Spy x Family, Suicide Squad Isekai and Yaiba: Samurai Legend. Due to the animation studio’s relevance and the names involved, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the short anime series evolved into a bigger project.
For now, though, it looks like the series’ main goal is to promote the content inside the Google Play store and showcase some features that people might not know that the Android software is capable of performing. After all episodes roll out, we will probably have a bigger picture of what Becoming Overpowered With Google Play?! Reincarnated as an Android User is ultimately going for.
