Summary

  • Collider speaks with director Ángel Manuel Soto for a spoiler-filled conversation about The Wrecking Crew.
  • In this interview, Soto discusses the behind-the-scenes making of Prime Video’s The Wrecking Crew, balancing violence and laughs, including Jason Momoa’s motorcycles, the importance of the music in the film, and more.
  • Soto also chats about sequel potential and future projects, including his adaptation of Just Cause, Transformers, and a leap into horror.

Amazon MGM Studios’ certified fresh action-comedy, The Wrecking Crew, plays out across the breathtaking island of Hawaiʻi, where stars Jason Momoa (Aquaman) and Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) act as audiences’ guides across the streets and shores in this raucous ride. Guiding them behind the scenes is Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto, who brings just as much heart, cultural authenticity, and tough subjects as he does “brutal” violence, epic needle drops, and laughs.

In The Wrecking Crew, Momoa and Bautista are estranged half-brothers, Jonny (Momoa) and James (Bautista), who reconnect after their father’s mysterious death. Determined to get to the bottom of his unexpected passing, the brothers must set aside their differences and work together to uncover the truth behind an unraveling conspiracy that threatens to tear their family apart. The movie also stars Morena Baccarin (Deadpool & Wolverine), Jacob Batalon (Spider-Man: No Way Home), Temuera Morrison (Chief of War), Claes Bang (The Northman), and Stephen Root (Barry).

During this conversation with Collider’s Steve Weintraub, Soto digs into crafting epic action sequences, deciding the level of brutality and violence, and balancing that with heart and humor, as well as what makes interesting action heroes, the importance of Guns N’ Roses, and setting up the potential for a sequel. As for the future, Soto shares updates for future projects he has his eyes set on, like his adaptation of Just Cause, the Transformers movie he co-wrote, and other genres he’s looking to explore, including horror. Check out the full discussion in the video above.
