Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake Endings

FF2 Remake Mio Mayu

If you have cleared Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake and want to unlock the other endings… or simply need to learn what happens without reaching them yourself, we have you covered with our Fatal Frame II remake endings explained guide. We’ve chosen to preserve a few surprises though.

Should you want to learn more about what awaits in the shadows, we’ve been extensively covering this new Fatal Frame II remake with evergreens and useful lists on top of our own review. Here’s the quick rundown with relevant links:

All Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake Endings Explained (and How to Obtain Them)

Getting every Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake ending isn’t particularly hard, but it can be time-consuming, especially if you don’t exactly know what you must do. This is our attempt at both explaining what goes down in all of them and how they’re unlocked.

Lonely Road Home

This one isn’t really an ending, but it can be considered a (negative) conclusion. Plus, it rewards players with an achievement.

When you get to the Kureha Shrine with Mayu, complete the puzzle inside the Old Tree and she gets taken away, you can fight three wraits and go inside the shrine again and just walk away through a now-opened secret door. Mio leaves Mayu behind and escapes the village.

Crimson Butterfly

This is the main ending, and the only one you can get during your first run of Fatal Frame II. The third game would also mark it as canon, just so you know. Just make sure to save the “clear data” to get two extra items you’ll need for other endings.

After facing the Kusabi inside the Ritual Room, Mio finishes the dark ritual and sacrifices Mayu to the Abyss.

The Promise

At this point, we’re entering into NG+ territory, meaning you can’t unlock this ending the first time around. There are two main things you’ll need to do in order to obtain this ending:

  • Complete Yae Kurosawa’s side story. It’s unlocked during Chapter 7 by returning to the courtyard at the Kurosawa House after escaping the Tachibana House with Mayu.
  • Continue and defeat the Kusabi while having Yae’s Sparkling Spirit Stone charm equipped.

In this ending, Mayu runs towards the Torii gates. After chasing her, you must fight the Kusabi with an extra aggravated state. When the sisters walk through the gates, Yae’s spirit leaves Mio and reunites with Sae in the Abyss. Mio and Mayu survive.

The Abyss

The Abyss also returns from the two previous versions of Fatal Frame II and must be done through NG+ as well. Here are the steps:

  • Complete the Kusabi’s side story, which starts in Chapter 4, which requires you to collect a number of journals. This will reward you with the Kusabi’s Sparkling Spirit Stone.
  • Continue and defeat the Kusabi while having his Sparkling Spirit Stone charm equipped.

He’ll have a second phase during the combat, gain back health, and get a new attack. Right after this battle, a bonus fight with Sae happens. Once you win, Mio saves Mayu, but also loses her eyesight permanently because she looks at the Abyss.

Sprouting Wings

Sprouting Wings is the first ending exclusive to this Fatal Frame II remake and requires previous completion of The Promise and The Abyss. After doing that, follow these steps:

  • Complete Sae’s two side stories (the second one now spawns during the final chapter) as well as Mayu’s (it kicks off after escaping the Tachibana House in Chapter 8). We highly recommend tackling the latter as soon as possible, as Mio and Mayu are separated inside the Old Tree soon after.
  • Equip Sae’s Sparkling Spirit Stone and Mayu’s before entering the Ritual Room.

You’ll have to repeat the two-phase Kusabi fight plus the Sae battle. After that, Mio tries to save Mayu by grabbing her hand, but fails and sends both of them falling into the darkness. However, the spirits of Yae and Sae save the day.

Remaining Sun

Last but not least, we have the hardest ending in the game by far. It involves replaying the game via NG+ on Nightmare difficulty, complete every side story, and more. Here are the steps:

  • Obtain all the other endings first.
  • Start a NG+ Nightmare run.
  • Complete every side story in the game.
  • Complete Mio’s side story and obtain her Sparkling Spirit Stone.
  • Equip Mio’s Sparkling Spirit Stone before the Kusabi fight.
  • Defeat Sae in under a minute. You’ll need to upgrade your camera and reels as much as possible and play aggressively.

If you fail to clear the combat within a minute, the game defaults to The Promise. If you clear the game’s ultimate challenge, you get an identical ending to Sprouting Wings, but also a new post-credits scene.
