Google will Kill Steam Support for Chrome OS Next Year

If you own a Chromebook and use it to play your favourite Steam titles, then we have some pretty bad news—Google will soon end support for the “Steam for Chromebook Beta” app, which will take effect starting in early 2026. We can’t say that this is too surprising, given that there’s apparently been no update for the app for quite a while.

According to new information from 9to5Google, running the Steam app on the ChromeOS launcher will display the following message:

The Steam for Chromebook Beta program will conclude on January 1st, 2026. After this date, games installed as part of the Beta will no longer be available to play on your device. We appreciate your participation in and contribution to learnings from the beta program, which will inform the future of Chromebook gaming.

The program made its debut back in 2022, with Google even working with manufacturers to promote gaming-focused Chromebooks. Aside from its continued support for Google Play titles, the company has not seen much longevity with gaming in general, as seen with the closure of Stadia a couple of years back.
