Headquartered in Bengaluru, Green Tiger Mobility specialises in converting petrol two-wheelers into electric and hybrid models, while also developing advanced power electronics for e-mobility.

Founded by Ashish Dokania in September 2020 and operational since 2021, Green Tiger Mobility is a private limited company with a dual focus: retrofitting petrol-powered two-wheelers into electric or hybrid vehicles, and designing and supplying power electronics such as vehicle control units, battery management systems (BMS), state of charge meters, and IoT devices.

Ashish explains that Green Tiger Mobility offers three main retrofit solutions. The first is a bi-mode hybrid system, which combines both petrol and electric powertrains. Users can switch between the two at the press of a button, providing enhanced flexibility and reliability. Green Tiger highlights this as a unique innovation, supported by six approved patents in India and one pending in the United States, positioning the company as the first in the world to introduce such a technology.

The company’s patents cover a range of proprietary technologies, including dual-throttle systems, integrated wire harnesses for dual powertrains, motor systems for geared vehicles, cloud-based remote locking, and switching mechanisms between electric and petrol modes. These innovations are key to maintaining a competitive edge and safeguarding intellectual property.

The second solution enables full electric conversion of a petrol vehicle using a portable battery that charges easily at home via a standard 5-amp socket. The third, designed for commercial riders who cover 100-150 kilometres daily, uses a swappable battery system. This solution is offered in partnership with Indofast (a joint venture between Indian Oil Corporation Limited and Sun Mobility) and Battery Smart.

To support these conversions, Green Tiger developed its own suite of electronic systems and components, as no suitable off-the-shelf solutions were available. This led to the creation of a second business vertical, through which it supplies proprietary power electronics—such as BMS and telematics—to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and fleet operators.

Ashish explains that the name ‘Green Tiger’ reflects the company’s mission: ‘Green’ stands for sustainability, while ‘Tiger’ represents strength and cultural resonance across South and Southeast Asia. Green Tiger Mobility embodies eco-conscious innovation in India’s automotive landscape, driven by a commitment to environmental responsibility, advanced technology, and reliable service.

The startup serves a broad customer base, from individual two-wheeler owners with ageing petrol engines to commercial riders seeking dependable, cost-effective transport. Their motivations typically include reducing running costs, improving mileage, and adopting greener alternatives.

Ashish notes that the retrofit process is carefully structured to ensure reliability and quality. Although the physical conversion takes about four hours, Green Tiger allows up to two days to complete the full procedure—including inspections, testing, and certification. It begins with a 130-parameter diagnostic check to assess the vehicle’s condition. “Once that is completed, the bill of materials is issued, the conversion is carried out, and both manual and cloud-based pre-delivery inspections are conducted. The vehicle is handed back to the customer only after all these steps are thoroughly completed,” he adds.

The cost of conversion varies slightly by system. A hybrid conversion, with different GST rates, is priced around ₹58,000. A full electric conversion with a portable battery costs approximately ₹52,500. The swappable battery model, developed in partnership with Indofast, is priced at ₹36,000, including RTO registration, GST, and insurance. Without RTO and insurance, the price is ₹32,000.

Green Tiger currently operates a single retrofit centre in Bommanahalli, Bengaluru, with plans to expand through both franchise and company-owned models in North Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi. Manufacturing is partially in-house and partially outsourced to contract manufacturers across North and South India. While design and testing are conducted internally, components such as wire harnesses, swing arms, and select suspension parts are produced externally, under Green Tiger’s intellectual property.

Most electronic components—such as MOSFETs and resistors—are sourced locally through Indian arms of global semiconductor firms. However, cells and motors are imported from China, owing to the lack of high-quality domestic alternatives.

The average turnaround time for a retrofit is two days. Since launching full-scale operations in August 2024, Green Tiger has completed approximately 600 retrofits. The team currently comprises around 55 employees, with operations actively scaling across India.

With 300 million existing two-wheelers on Indian roads, the startup sees vast untapped potential in the domestic market. It has no immediate plans to enter the three- or four-wheeler segments or explore international expansion. The focus remains firmly on strengthening and growing its presence within India.
