Colorful makeup is making a big comeback this year. From hyper-blushed cheeks cheeks to highly-pigmented eye looks, the era of fun makeup has officially returned and is leading the season’s top trends. While fall is no stranger to vampy makeup, this season the classic look gets a fresh twist as it leans into a single hue: Wine. Across TikTok, red wine makeup is the aesthetic making waves this fall. Deep tones and dark lipsticks are a given for autumn, but this trend embraces the shade in a more creative manner. With this look, burgundy splashed lids are as common as stained cheeks and lips. Best of all, recreating the look has never been easier. Ahead, we tapped two celebrity makeup artists for everything you need to know about red wine makeup this fall.

What is the red wine makeup trend?

Like the latte makeup trend, the red wine aesthetic is rooted in a desirable beverage. This time around, the look is taking cues from the nuanced shades in wine rather than coffee. The two trends have another common element that has skyrocketed them to viral fame. While the designated hue can be used all over the face, the eyeshadow looks have proven to be the most popular. “Wine-washed lids with a touch of gloss is the most common effect,” says celebrity makeup artist, Charlie Riddle. If you’ve come across the trend on your own FYP, you’ve probably seen a few versions of the red wine eye look. According to Riddle, the glossy lid, or even those dusted with shimmer, are popular ways to give the trend a more fashion-forward feel.

However, the beauty of the trend is its versatility. Outside of the eyes, red wine shades can be applied to the cheeks and lips, and can be used to accent or create a monochromatic look. “Burgundy is such a statement shade, but it’s also surprisingly versatile,” says Riddle. Makeup artist at LRN Beauty, Katherine Dorn, adds that leaning into the varying undertones of wine is essential for nailing the trend. “Burgundy comes in many shades, from dark brick with brown undertones to ruby hues with touches of violet. It really just depends on which way you want to go,” she says.

A red wine lip is an easy entry into this trend. If you’re using the color to accent your lips, the pros suggest keeping the skin fresh and the rest of your makeup simple. “Use a dark liner that borders brown to line your lips and a deeper red wine shade to fill them in,” says Dorn. For those looking for an effortless approach, Riddle recommends buffing a wine-toned eyeshadow onto the lids, making sure to diffuse any harsh lines. “Red wine looks best when it feels a little lived-in, not overly precise,” he says. You can also use this approach to achieve a monochromatic look. However, if you’re aiming to use one shade all over the face, Dorn notes you should assess your undertones first. Cool skin tones work well with berry or plum-coded wine shades, while Riddle says that warmer complexions should try options that lean more toward brick or brown.
