In Tamil Nadu, where cinema and politics have long shared the same charged stage, Dhurandhar The Revenge just scored a courtroom victory that keeps its momentum alive. The Ranveer Singh-led action thriller, already surrounded by intense conversation for its timing and themes, will continue screening through the state’s election season after the Madras High Court refused to halt its run.
The petition had sought an ad interim direction to stop the film’s exhibition in theatres and on OTT platforms until election results were declared. The court, however, declined to interfere at the admission stage, allowing the film to remain in circulation without disruption at a moment when its visibility is only growing louder.
Court Dismisses Plea Against Dhurandhar The Revenge
A bench led by Chief Justice S.A. Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arul Murugan dismissed the petitions on April 10. The judges made it clear that there is no law preventing a film from being released or screened during the Model Code of Conduct period. The bench also noted that the CBFC certificate granted to the film had not been challenged, leaving no immediate legal basis to restrain its exhibition.
As quoted in court coverage of the proceedings, the bench observed, “What is the law that a movie cannot be released when the Model Code of Conduct is in place? The CBFC has given a certificate. It is not challenged. Unless that is challenged, nothing can be done. The statutory body has permitted.”
The petitioner, identified in court reports as a Madurai resident, argued that the film’s screening during the sensitive poll phase could disturb the principle of a level playing field and go against the spirit of free and fair elections. The court did not accept that argument. That refusal also sharpened focus on why this particular film had become such a lightning rod during the election window.
Election Season Meets A High Voltage Political Thriller
The controversy around Dhurandhar The Revenge did not emerge in a vacuum. The film has been widely discussed for its nationalist tone and politically loaded atmosphere, elements that naturally attract more scrutiny when a state is in the middle of a high stakes electoral contest. That made its continued theatrical run in Tamil Nadu a flashpoint, especially for those who believed the timing itself carried influence.
Directed by Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar The Revenge is a Hindi spy action thriller produced by Jio Studios and B62 Studios. The film stars Ranveer Singh alongside Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan and Sara Arjun. Released in March 2026, it serves as a sequel to Dhurandhar and follows an undercover Indian intelligence operative navigating dangerous cross border networks while pursuing a larger revenge mission. Both the films proved all time blockbuster.
With the High Court declining to stop screenings, the ruling gives the film a clean runway in theatres during one of the most talked about phases of its release. That matters not just for ticket sales, but for the scale of public conversation around a film that has already positioned itself at the intersection of star power, politics and mass-market spectacle.
