Netflix‘s upcoming Philip K. Dick adaptation has the potential to join the ranks with Silo and Fallout and become the next dystopian epic.

Silo and Fallout are easily among the most compelling and commercially successful dystopian thrillers on streaming right now. Even after two seasons, both post-apocalyptic TV shows have refused to lose momentum and are all set to further expand their bleak, immersive worlds. As Silo and Fallout continue their sci-fi reign, however, Netflix, too, promises to deliver an enthralling dystopian drama.

Like Silo, the upcoming Netflix sci-fi show is also a book adaptation and seems to hold immense potential.

Netflix is adapting Philip K. Dick’s cult novel, The World Jones Made. The show is officially titled The Future Is Ours. From a commercial standpoint alone, The World Jones Made does not rank among Philip K. Dick’s best known novels. However, it adopts an intriguing concept and brings some compelling sci-fi ideas to the table in its post-apocalyptic world that could make it the perfect Silo and Fallout rival.

While Silo‘s primary story drivers are the mysteries of the central setting’s past, Fallout focuses more on how chaotic the present world has become in the wake of nuclear annihilation. As the original Philip K. Dick novel reveals, The Future is Ours will be more about foresight for what lies ahead and how determinism itself can cause more harm than good.

Given how Philip K. Dick’s works do not usually adopt conventional storytelling formats and often focus more on philosophical paradoxes than straightforward plot progression, it seems unlikely Netflix’s take on The World Jones Made will not be a direct book-to-screen adaptation. Reports also reveal that the show will completely eradicate one of the key plots from the book, which introduces an alien species.

While only time will tell how these book changes will work out, Netflix’s The Future is Ours is being created by the production team behind Netflix’s The Eternaut and One Hundred Years of Solitude. Considering the success of both shows, the upcoming series already seems promising.

The Philip K. Dick adaptation on Netflix also benefits from the fact that its source material, like Silo and Fallout, is not a conventional exploration of a post-apocalyptic world and brings something new to the table.

What Is Netflix’s The Future Is Ours About?

Netflix’s The Future is Ours will be set in the year 2047, where, in the wake of a global ecological collapse, a coalition of South American countries, called FedSur, resorts to extreme measures to solve hunger. This is when a young preacher named Jonás Flores rises to fame online because of his ability to foresee the future.

He is soon arrested, but his precognition ability helps him gain a massive following, especially after he foresees FedSur’s downfall and humanity’s imminent win over climate change. This, however, triggers a chain reaction of events that blurs the line between prophecy and manipulation, proving that predicting the future is not as simple as it seems.

It may be a little too soon to predict how the Netflix Philip K. Dick adaptation will turn out, but its plot alone makes it seem as intriguing as Silo and Fallout.
