New SyFy Horror Series With ‘Wynonna Earp’ Star Debuts to Absolutely Killer Rotten Tomatoes Score

Wynonna Earp star Melanie Scrofano is back on SyFy with a new series, and the critics are howling with delight. Revival, a series about the dead mysteriously returning to life in a small Wisconsin town, currently holds a 90% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, after its first episode debuted on the network last night. New episodes of the series will debut on Thursdays, and will stream on Peacock the following week.

The new series is based on the Image Comics series of the same name by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton. The duo released 47 issues between 2012 and 2017. The adaptation was a long time coming; it was first optioned to be adapted for TV in 2012, spending some time in development hell before production began last year in New Brunswick, Canada. Critics seem to agree that the series was worth the wait. Collider’s Carly Lane agrees with the critical consensus in her review, in which she praises the series as “a fun, refreshing addition to low-budget, small-screen horror fare.” If you want to see it for yourself, you can watch the series on SyFy or Peacock, or stream the pilot episode on YouTube for free.

What Is ‘Revival’ About?

As Revival opens, small-town cop Dana Cypress (Scrofano) is planning to pack up and leave her hometown of Wasau, Wisconsin, with her son Cooper (Hudson Wurster, Ghosts) in tow. Instead, she finds herself pressed into action when the dead start rising from their graves. These aren’t the mindless, ravenous zombies of Night of the Living Dead or The Walking Dead: they’ve been mysteriously restored to life as they were before they died. They aren’t quite as they were, however. They heal from any injury, meaning they can’t die again. In the chaos that ensues, Dana is pressed back into action by her dad/boss, Sheriff Wayne Cypress (David James Elliott, JAG). As she tries to keep the peace amidst a quarantine order and the living townspeople’s distrust of the “revivers,” she’s also investigating a mysterious murder in which everyone, living or undead, is a suspect.

Canadian actor Scrofano broke out as the title demon hunter on Wynonna Earp, which recently concluded with the Tubi-original special Wynonna Earp: Vengeance. She has also starred in Letterkenny and Bad Blood. She can next be seen reprising her role of Captain Marie Batel when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds‘ third season premieres next month.
