While Nintendo’s upcoming Pokemon Direct is still a few days away (it’s happening on February 27, to be precise), that hasn’t stopped the company from seemingly dropping two upcoming titles for the Nintendo Switch. More specifically, Nintendo—along with the Pokemon Company and Game Freak—announced that Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are finally headed to the Nintendo Switch as part of the Pokemon franchise’s 30th anniversary celebration.
For those unfamiliar, FireRed and LeafGreen were originally released in 2004 for the Gameboy Advance, and were remakes of the original Pokemon Red and Blue games. The newer entries featured updated visuals and gameplay mechanics, as well as new additions to the roster of in-game Pokemon and map locations, among others. Nintendo says that Switch owners can expect updated graphics and local multiplayer functionality as well.
It should be noted though that the two games will be sold as standalone titles for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, and will NOT be included as part of the Nintendo Switch Online selection of Gameboy Advance titles, which in contrast are subscription-based. They’re available for pre-order via the Nintendo eShop for $19.99 each.
