Obsidian Didn’t Originally Plan for A Third-Person

The Outer Worlds 2 1

The Outer Worlds 2 wasn’t originally going to offer us the option of playing using a third-person camera, Obsidian has revealed. The now-confirmed feature only made its way into the development pipeline relatively late.

The lack of proper support for a third-person perspective was one of the recurring complaints with the original game, and the community’s desire to freely change perspective while playing seems to have struck a chord with the team behind the sequel set to launch later this month.

The Outer Worlds 2 Third-Person Camera

“We didn’t intend to do third-person when we first started the game,” Game Director Brandon Adler explained speaking to Game Informer. “We actually didn’t start doing it until, really, maybe about two years ago or so.”

When the team initially discussed the features it intended to add to The Outer Worlds 2, a third-person camera wasn’t included. The cost of developing it was one of the potential reasons for why it was, once again, going to be missing in action.

Then, “about halfway through” the developer reconsidered because “people are really going to want this,” proceeding to look into “how difficult it was going to be to implement it.”

The Outer Worlds 2’s third-person perspective was developed in collaboration with a team called Disruptive, leading to the ability of seamlessly swapping between it and the title’s first-person camera during gameplay.

There’s a good chance that the feedback fans offered after the launch of the original played a part in the developer’s change of heart, and it’s certainly great to hear that the sequel offers more options in terms of how we interact with it.

The Outer Worlds 2 is slated to launch on October 29, 2025, on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. Owners of its Premium Edition can hop in starting with October 24.
