A new generation of Pokémon games is coming. Wind and Wave are now official. We’ve gathered all the important information here.
Pokémon has a lot to celebrate right now. In 2026, the universe surrounding the popular pocket monsters will celebrate its 30th anniversary! For this reason, the new edition of Pokémon Red and Blue (FireRed and LeafGreen) was recently made available on the Switch 2.
But for many fans, even more important: in 2026, the 10th generation of games was unveiled! We got a glimpse of the next two editions, called Wind and Wave, in a first trailer. The currently confirmed information is still very limited – but we still have some important details for you.
Release: When will the editions be released?
As is often the case, there is no exact date for the two new editions yet. However, we already know in which year the next generation will be launched:
- Wind and Waves are scheduled to be released sometime in 2027.
So there’s still plenty of time. In the worst case, fans will have to wait a whole 21 months to travel with their Pokémon again. Scarlet and Violet were last released in 2022, so there will probably be between four and five years between the two games – one of the longest development times for a new Pokémon generation!
Platforms: Where will the editions be released?
As usual, Wind and Wave will be playable exclusively on Nintendo. You can’t officially play a single Pokémon on PC, Xbox, or PlayStation. However, the next generation will be released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 and no longer for the Switch 1!

Region: What do we know about the game world?
There is no name for the new region yet, but we already have a good idea of what to expect. Similar to Sun and Moon, the region seems to be inspired by the tropics – although this time it’s more Southeast Asian than Caribbean. In any case, the game world once again consists of a multitude of islands that we can freely explore.
Gamefreak is sticking with the open-world approach established in Scarlet and Violet, so the new editions will probably be very similar to their two predecessors in terms of gameplay. However, this time the world is fragmented and separated by lots of water.
On top of that, wind and waves offer a vast underwater world that we can apparently traverse and explore.
Other interesting biomes include dense jungles, wide beaches, humid swamps, and probably a fiery volcano.
Pokémon: What new monsters are there?
The first trailer mainly showed lots of familiar Pokémon roaming around the new region. There are already quite a few of them. Water Pokémon in particular were featured heavily in the trailer. But there was also a first glimpse of some completely new monsters! These are, of course, the three starters that you will choose as your partners this time:
- Braubel: A plant bird
- Gekkua: A blue water gecko
- Pomfifi: A cute fire puppy.

In addition, we were given a glimpse of two special Pikachu variants. It is still unclear whether we will be able to add them to our team or whether they will only appear in the story:
- Windchu: A male Shiny Pikachu wearing a Hawaiian shirt and sun hat.
- Wellchu: A female Shiny Pikachu wearing a pretty dress and cap.
Of course, many questions remain unanswered, and the release is still a long way off. However, we will stay on top of the topic and update this article when new information becomes available. Until the release of the new generation, Pokémon fans will not be left high and dry. Pokopia, a new game with a completely different approach, will be released on March 5. You can find out how well it turned out in our review linked above.
