Few roles in Indian cinema come with the emotional weight, scrutiny and reverence that surround Lord Ram, which is exactly why the latest words from Nitesh Tiwari and Ranbir Kapoor have struck such a chord. Tiwari described Lord Ram as “a man of few words” whose love is “unbound” and whose pain is felt rather than seen, before declaring that there is “nobody better than #RanbirKapoor to portray all these things & manage the expectations of a billion people.”

That statement has instantly sharpened curiosity around Ramayana, which is directed by Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios in collaboration with Monster Mind Creations. Prime Focus Studios has confirmed Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman and Ravie Dubey as Lakshmana. The first part is scheduled for theatrical release in 2026, followed by the second in 2027.

Ranbir Kapoor On Finding Lord Ram’s Inner Stillness

Ranbir Kapoor’s own explanation of his process offered a clear sense of how he approached the role. “My Dharma is to do my job in the best way possible with honesty & truthfulness. There’s a beautiful saying in our scriptures, धर्मो रक्षति रक्षितः, which translates to Dharma protects those who uphold it, which is what I tried to do while playing this role,” he said. He then revealed a crucial part of his preparation: “I watched Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana to prepare for Lord Ram’s character.”

Those remarks neatly echo Tiwari’s reading of the character as someone defined by restraint, emotional depth and spiritual conviction. Rather than pitch the performance in louder terms, both actor and director seem to be emphasizing quiet power, which is central to how audiences have long understood Lord Ram on screen.

Prime Focus Studios has also confirmed that the two-part adaptation is being mounted for IMAX, with music by Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman.

Why This Role Arrives At A Defining Career Moment

What makes Ramayana especially significant for Ranbir Kapoor is where it arrives in his career. Over the past few years, he has moved through very different commercial spaces, from Ayan Mukerji’s fantasy spectacle Brahmastra Part One: Shiva and the period action film Shamshera in 2022, to Luv Ranjan’s Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar in 2023. Later that year, Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, became the biggest box office success of his career and re-established his ability to command a massive theatrical response.

That run gives Ramayana an added layer of intrigue. Kapoor is no longer simply taking on another major release, he is stepping into a role that demands stillness, moral authority and deep cultural memory. With Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love and War also confirmed as a forthcoming theatrical project, this phase of his career looks increasingly shaped by films that aim for both star power and legacy.
