A year after the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar Games launched its online component, Red Dead Online. Much like GTA’s online counterpart, Red Dead Online drops players into the open world of the main game in a total free-for-all that’s often very chaotic. It’s pretty good, but it was fairly light on content at launch, and it was criticized at launch for its monetization and balancing.

It got a few major content updates in the years that followed, but in 2021 after lackluster player retention, Rockstar decided to refocus its resources on GTA Online and the upcoming (and recently delayed) GTA 6. Now, after four years of minor repeated events and the occasional little update here and there, Red Dead Online is getting a bunch of brand-new content.

Rockstar Games has just launched what it’s calling Strange Tales of the West in Red Dead Online, which includes a series of new telegram missions revolving around some strange goings-on in the world of Red Dead. Here’s the description, as described by Rockstar on the Red Dead Online website

Author Theodore Levin can’t believe the rumors and missives he’s been receiving from the four corners of the American frontier. He’s working on an anthology of these unexplained and weird phenomena and he needs your help investigating the wildest claims that cross his desk.

Four “strange tales” will be available in the game from today, all of which will require you to investigate a bizarre case, be it a murderous robot, a zombie plague, or a missing scientist. From now until August 4, players taking part in these new missions (and other telegram missions) will even get 3x gold, RDO$, and XP for their trouble.

Perhaps more exciting is that the trailer for this new content calls it Strange Tales of the West Vol. 1, suggesting that this might be the start of a whole new wave of content for the game. It’s hard to say how long this renewed interest in the game will last, but at least in the meantime there will be something for fans to enjoy.
