Bollywood’s Shraddha Kapoor will soon enter the daring, passionate, and culturally rich world of Tamasha as she takes on the role of Lavani queen Vithabai Narayangaonkar in a biopic directed by Laxman Utekar, who recently directed Mimi and is known for his upcoming movie Chhaava.

The producers have recently met with Vithabai’s family in Pune, and they were able to obtain the life rights to her incredible life story — a story that is rooted so deeply in the heritage of folk tradition, resilience, and performance in the state of Maharashtra.

Shraddha Kapoor To Channel The Spirit Of A Folk Heroine

During what will be an incredibly challenging and transformative undertaking of her career, Shraddha will play the part of legendary Vithabai Narayangaonkar, an icon of Tamasha — the traditional Marathi theatre style full of passionate performances and electrifying Lavani performances.

The story of Vithabai is not just about a dancer — it is about a woman that broke boundaries in a male-dominated space and redefined folk art for generations to come,” says a source close to the project.

Directed by Utekar, Music by Ajay-Atul

This ambitious project will be directed by Laxman Utekar, who has just taken over directing the historical drama Chhaava with Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna.

Utekar, known to be a master at emotional and cultural granularity, is poised to give a complex and respectful lens on Vithabai’s compelling journey.

Alongside Utekar will be music composers Ajay-Atul, who, having given their roots in the musical traditions of Maharashtra, are ideally suited to reimagine Lavani for the screen while honouring its earthy rootedness.

Exercising authenticity, the filmmakers engaged with Vithabai’s family in Pune and secured full-life rights. This biopic will likely illuminate her craft, the sacrifices throughout her private life, and the sustainability of her contribution to Indian folk performance.

Production is likely to start in early 2026, where Shraddha will undergo Lavani and Tamasha dialect training prior to production.

Box Office Worldwide Verdict

Shraddha Kapoor’s biopic on Vithabai Narayangaonkar promises to be a landmark event for Indian folk art in commercial cinema, and the industry is watching closely. With Laxman Utekar’s sensitive direction, Ajay-Atul’s magical soundscape, and Shraddha’s expanding artistic horizon, this film might potentially re-energise Lavani and its grandeur on screen, whilst respecting the remarkable woman who redefined tradition.

From flash to grassroots, this will be the performance hidden India will witness.
