According to a Chinese tipster on Weibo, OpenAI is planning to launch its first hardware product. It’s a pair of earbuds powered by the company’s own AI model, ChatGPT. According to the report, the company decided to scale back on its hardware efforts for the time being, likely because of the rising hardware costs.

OpenAI’s first ChatGPT-powered earbuds
Initially, OpenAI was rumoured to be working on a small pendant or a pen, as the CEO, Sam Altman, pointed out that the device would be calmer and more peaceful than a smartphone. It was also reported that OpenAI hired Apple’s ex-chief designer Jony Ive.
There have probably been changes in the plans since rumours of the device first surfaced. The company is going with something simpler — AI-powered earbuds. There aren’t any more details except that it will be called “Dime”. It’s expected to hit the market by the end of this year. Once the HBM (high-bandwidth memory) shortage improves, OpenAI will roll out a more advanced version of the product.
