The Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) officially announced the next-generation flash storage that will soon be available to our devices. The UFS 5.0 storage standard is ready. All that’s left is massive production to begin.

The major focus of the UFS 5.0 is on improving performance and energy efficiency for AI systems, mobile phones and edge computing. Additionally, the UFS 5.0 storage will seamlessly work with hardware designed for UFS 4.x, making it easy for manufacturers to adopt the new standard without significant redesigns.

The UFS 5.0 is almost twice as fast as its predecessor, USF 4.0, with a 10.8 GB/s bandwidth. In comparison, the UFS 4.0 and 4.1 standards offer up to 5.8 GB/s bandwidth.

Other than the performance improvements, the new link equalisation feature improves signal stability. It also features a dedicated power rail to reduce interference between physical and memory layers, boosting the overall reliability. UFS 5.0 will protect user data better with the newly introduced inline hashing.

Details on the exact release date of UFS 5.0 weren’t included in JEDEC’s announcement, but as soon as manufacturers start producing the standard, phone users will be able to experience faster performance.
