Samsung is introducing Android 17-based One UI 9.0 with glass design elements to Galaxy phones and tablets. With One UI 8.5, the company brought more visual changes. These include pill-shaped bottom tab bars and glass-like visual effects for some UI elements. This is different from Apple’s ‘Liquid Glass’.
Some features of the Android 17-based One UI 9.0 have surfaced. Reports from Google show that it’s implementing glass-like visual effects, like background blur, for various system elements.
You can notice the background blur effects in the Quick Panel, volume sliders in both compact and expanded forms, the power menu, and the notifications section. This doesn’t remove the wallpaper in the background.
Moreso, the UI elements feature Android’s Dynamic Colour system, which applies colours to UI elements based on the home screen wallpaper. This is Samsung’s colour palette.
With Android 17, users will experience screen recording improvement. This involves drawing over a screen recording to show touch indicators, then choosing whether to record audio from the device or the microphone, or even both. It allows users to edit, share clips and delete once the recording is over. Thus, the system displays the elapsed recording time in a pill-shaped bar in the status bar at the top of the screen.
Google is developing a simple app lock feature and Samsung is likely to integrate it into One UI 9.0 for Galaxy phones and tablets, if it turns out successfully with Android 17.
It’s expected that Google will unveil the Android 17 Developer Beta 1 in the first quarter of this year. Then, the final stable release will be in the middle of the year.
