In what is a surprising announcement, Unni Mukundan has stated that a sequel to his 2024 action film Marco, which was one of the most anticipated sequels since the first part released, is off because of all the negativity around the sequel.

Unni Responds To Fan Comment And Says Sequel Is Off

The news did not come via an official announcement but rather through Unni responding to a fan comment on social media, stating that the sequel was dropped.

Unni, who has engaged with fans on social media regularly, responded to a fan thanking them for the love and stated that:

The negativity around the project was going to make it difficult to follow up,” adding, “There’s just too much negativity around it. So shelving it. I promise something bigger and better soon.

This is disappointing news for fans who were hoping to see the continuation of Marco‘s blood-soaked revenge saga, as the first film left audiences with the suggestion of a third instalment — its first film was even going to have a major sequel.

Marco: Unni Mukundan’s Local Action Film Turns National Phenomena

Released in December 2024, Marco was a change for Unni Mukundan, and it became his biggest hit both critically and commercially.

Directed by Haneef Adeni, the film exceeded ₹100 crore internationally from a ₹100 crore budget — a remarkable accomplishment for a Malayalam-language action film.

In spite of the A rating and gritty nature of the film, audiences supported the movie in theatres and digitally — by sustaining itself on Sony LIV and OTTplay Premium, which acquired the digital rights shortly after its theatrical run.

Brutal Tale of Revenge That Hit a Note

Marco told the tale of a tortured gangster on a revenge mission over his sibling’s death while caught in the lies of the Adat gold mafia.

Made the film a worthwhile shifting of gears in Malayalam cinema, Unni’s portrayal and the action choreography were highlighted for a presentation that seemed to be unprecedented for the industry.

Also featuring Jagadish, Kabir Duhan Singh, Siddique, and Abhimanyu Shammy Thilakan, the film showed all the telltale signs of a franchise — until now.

Box Office Worldwide Verdict

It isn’t every day that a ₹100 crore Malayalam film leaves a certain franchise. While Marco will live on with fans, it will officially be the end of the road for the sequel, and with it, an opportunity for a trilogy.

Knowing Unni as an artist and cinematographer who can keep reinventing himself, his claim of something “bigger and better” is worth following closely.

In the meantime, though, Marco will remain an industry landmark — raw, rugged, and unregrettable.
