James Tolkan, the veteran character actor best known for his roles in Top Gun and the Back to the Future franchise, has died at the age of 94. He passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 26, in Saranac Lake, New York.
News of Tolkan’s death was confirmed by Back to the Future collaborators, including writer-producer Bob Gale and unit publicist Michael Klastorin, and was also shared on the franchise’s official website.
Born on June 20, 1931, in Calumet, Michigan, Tolkan’s path to Hollywood was anything but conventional. After his parents divorced, he traveled across the country as a teenager, eventually graduating from high school in Arizona. Following a brief stint in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and time at multiple colleges, Tolkan moved to New York City with just $75, working on the docks while studying acting under Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg.
He spent more than two decades in New York theater, including as part of the original ensemble cast of Glengarry Glen Ross, before transitioning into film and television, with his first acting credit coming in 1960 for Naked City. Tolkan’s career took off in the early 1980s after appearing in projects like Sidney Lumet’s Prince of the City (1981), which eventually ended up landing him a role in WarGames.
Tolkan became a familiar face to audiences thanks to his commanding screen presence, most notably as the strict but memorable Principal Mr. Strickland in the Back to the Future trilogy. He reprised the role across all three films, even appearing as the character’s ancestor in Back to the Future Part III. He most recently reunited with the film’s star, Michael J. Fox, at FAN EXPO New Orleans back in January 2025. In a photo shared by the fan event’s official Instagram account, Tolkan, then 93, is seen pointing his finger at Fox, 63, in a scolding manner, a callback to their encounter within the halls of Hill Valley High School. Tolkan was also widely recognized for playing Commander “Stinger” in Top Gun alongside Tom Cruise. With a career spanning more than five decades, Tolkan appeared in dozens of films and TV shows, including The Amityville Horror, Armed and Dangerous, The Wonder Years, Leverage, and The Pretender. One of his final film roles came in 2015’s Bone Tomahawk.
Tolkan is survived by his wife of 54 years, Parmelee, whom he met during an off-Broadway production in 1971, as well as three nieces. Instead of flowers, his family has asked that donations be made to local animal shelters or rescue organizations, reflecting his lifelong love of animals.
