People have been quietly wondering whether Fitbit was even still a thing. Google confirmed new Fitbit hardware was coming in 2026 back in October, but details stayed vague. Now we’re getting a much clearer picture, and the device looks nothing like what most Fitbit fans would expect. According to Bloomberg, Google is working on a screenless Fitbit band designed to compete directly with Whoop, and NBA star Steph Curry has apparently been wearing one in public since January.
Curry, who serves as Google’s Performance Advisor, posted a teaser on Instagram back in March showing the device on his wrist. It’s a fabric band in light grey with orange accents and no visible display anywhere on it. He called it “the first of its kind” and said it was “coming soon.”
Since then, Droid-Life dug back through footage of Curry from the past few months and found he’s been wearing the band at warmups, through the All-Star game, and into March, only taking it off during actual games where the NBA likely wouldn’t allow it. That’s a lot of real-world testing time.
What Will It Actually Do?
The short answer: most of the tracking happens in your phone, not on your wrist. Bloomberg reports the band will ship with basic features included, while deeper health insights will sit behind a Fitbit Premium subscription. That’s the same playbook Whoop uses, and it makes sense for a device with no screen to interact with.
Droid-Life also spotted what looks like an updated Fitbit app UI running on a Pixel phone during one of Curry’s workouts, showing live cardio load, heart rate, energy burned, and elapsed time labeled as a “Sport” activity. That’s not something the current Fitbit app supports without GPS, which suggests Google is building new software specifically for this device.
This is a notable direction shift for the brand. Google has spent the last couple of years steering Fitbit away from smartwatches and back toward its tracker roots. A screenless Fitbit band focused on sleep, recovery, and long-term health data fits that picture exactly. No launch date has been announced, but between the Bloomberg report and how long Curry has been spotted wearing it, a reveal doesn’t feel far off.
