Joachim Trier and Renate Reinsve may be the best actor-director team in the world.
Auteur and star have so far collaborated on three films, including last year’s drama Sentimental Value, which garnered each of them an Oscar nomination. Another of Trier’s films, 2021’s The Worst Person in the World, catapulted Reinsve to international fame, while snagging her the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Even as she is set to star in the new creepypasta-inspired horror film Backrooms, Reinsve offered an update on whether she and her favorite director have lined up a fourth project together. On the red carpet for the premiere of Backrooms, Renate Reinsve told ScreenRant‘s Tatiana Hullender, “Oh, [Trier] is now going into the writing room and starting from scratch and starting at zero. I have no idea, and he has no idea yet. So I’m just excited for whatever he writes and does next. And if I have a place there, I would of course love to, but let’s see.”
A24’s Backrooms is set to release in theaters on May 29, 2026. Directed by Kane Parsons, the film follows Reinsve’s therapist character as she descends into another dimension in search of a patient who has gone missing. Parsons made the original hugely popular Backrooms web series under the pseudonym Kane Pixels.
In addition to her starring role in A24’s new horror movie, Reinsve is set to appear alongside Sebastian Stan in the drama Fjord, which has been entered into the main competition at this year’s Cannes Festival.
Trier’s follow-up to Sentimental Value has, as indicated by Reinsve, not yet been settled upon, at least to her knowledge, but the director will have a tough time topping that acclaimed drama, which sits at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. ScreenRant’s own Sentimental Value review praised the film as a career-crowning work by Trier, calling it “absolutely breathtaking,” while praising Reinsve’s “terrifically subtle” acting.
2021’s The Worst Person in the World also got a rave review from ScreenRant, who praised the “remarkable depth” Reinsve brought to her character, saying of the movie, “It’s progressive, it’s unapologetically feminist, and it’s unforgettable.”
Reinsve and Trier’s first time working together came back in 2011, when the star was cast in her film debut in the director’s Oslo, August 31st, the second film in a trilogy that began with 2006’s Reprise and ended with the aforementioned Worst Person in the World.
