Patal Bhairav Temple in Ujjain

The Patal Bhairav Temple in Ujjain is one of the most revered spiritual destinations visited by devotees and tourists throughout the year. Close to the temple lies a sacred cave shrine dedicated to Goddess Mahakali, who is worshipped as the supreme source of cosmic energy and divine power. Devotees believe that offering prayers at this holy shrine protects them from negative forces and brings strength, peace, and blessings into their lives. The mystical atmosphere of the cave temple and its spiritual significance create a truly unforgettable experience for visitors.

According to Hindu mythology, the origin of the Patal Bhairav Temple is connected with Goddess Kali and Bhairav Nath. It is believed that Goddess Kali appeared in the form of a young girl known as Vaishno Devi. When the cruel demon Bhairav Nath noticed her and began following her, the Goddess shot an arrow into the earth to escape from him. Instantly, a hidden cave emerged, and she entered it for protection while the demon searched for her.

Later, Goddess Mahakali engaged in a fierce battle with Bhairav Nath and defeated him. Before his death, the demon sought forgiveness and mercy from the Goddess. Showing compassion, Mahakali granted him moksha and blessed him with a boon. Since then, it has become a sacred tradition for devotees to visit the Bhairav Nath Temple after receiving the blessings of Goddess Mahakali at the cave shrine.
