A new city builder and management sim game is coming to town, and this one’s taking players back to a Mesoamerican culture “that flourished for three great centuries.” Enter Aztecs: The Last Sun, coming soon to Steam Early Access.

The game will be published by Toplitz Productions, of Medieval Dynasty fame. It’s being developed by Play2Chill, a studio that’s focused on ‘simulator’ games for the most part but has also been making big moves into other genres. The current plan is to keep Aztecs: The Last Sun in early access for at least 12 months after it launches on August 28.

Alongside the release date reveal, a new gameplay trailer has been shared. You can watch it below:

The game has players taking over the “role of an Aztec leader trying to build the city state of Tenochtitlan.” This involves more than just building and managing a single settlement, with “gut-wrenching decisions” being teased as part of the process of building, developing, and protecting a lasting society.

The most intriguing details shared so far pertain to “the wrath of the Moon Goddess” and the survival mechanics that make Aztecs more than yet another city builder. When this deity targets the city, only “bloodzones” can “withstand her fury.” This means blood-gathering and storing (as well as its later use by priests) is an entire system which gives this game a distinct gameplay loop and flavor we’re excited for.

Needless to say, Aztecs: The Last Sun also “combines three different aspects” of city management: economic, military, and religious growth, all of which are intrinsically tied to the culture. Overall, it’s promising a blend of old and new in order to successfully bring to life the Aztec civilization between the 13th and 16th centuries CE without leaving the dark mythological elements behind.
