Tabassam Zabier, speaking at the launch, said the project was created to support those who quietly struggle. “There are families out there who genuinely struggle. These are the families who will find this community fridge useful,” he said.

He added that the fridge focuses on everyday essentials. “The products are things that families may need every day, like bread, milk and tinned food.”

How It Works

The fridge does not accept cash. Instead, it relies on donations of surplus food from local businesses, shops, supermarkets, and individuals. A team of volunteers manages the fridge and keeps it stocked.

Zabier said: “We invite local businesses, shops, supermarkets and individuals to join us in this important mission. Your contributions of surplus food items will help us serve those who need it most.”

Opening Day

The fridge launched after Friday prayers at the mosque. Blackburn with Darwen Labour group leader Councillor Phil Riley and newly elected Independent Councillor Maullana Siddiq Patel attended the opening alongside mosque volunteers.

Within the first day, around 25 people had already visited the fridge.

Tabassam also thanked those who made the project possible. “Something like this requires a lot of effort, and we would like to thank the volunteers for their support. We would also like to thank Raja Video for making space at the shop to accommodate us.”

Part of a Wider Network
