Danielle Campbell is no stranger to the spotlight—but her latest role in The Waterfront feels like a revelation. The new Netflix series, from Scream and Dawson’s Creek creator Kevin Williamson, has held steady in the streamer’s Top 10 since its premiere last month, drawing viewers into a gritty Southern world where family loyalty comes at a steep price. Starring opposite Maria Bello and Melissa Benoist, Campbell plays a young woman caught between obligation and identity in what feels like her most layered role yet. For fans who first fell in love with her during her Disney Channel days, this is the star all grown up—more grounded, more complex and more captivating than ever.
Besides its success, what excites you most about this show?
I can’t wait for everyone to meet the Buckleys, and see this world we built! It’s elegant and beautiful on the surface, but underneath, there’s this constant tension simmering. It’s a show about what people are willing to do to protect their power, image, and legacy, and how fragile those things really are. There’s something haunting and seductive about that mix. From the first script, I was drawn in by the web of relationships and the strength of the women in the story.
How is this project different than anything else you’ve done?
My character Peyton Buckley, was so rewarding to explore. She’s calculating but deeply human, someone who’s learned to adapt in a world built on image, power and manipulation. There’s a force about her, that reveals itself slowly. This role challenged me to communicate through subtext, stillness and subtle shifts which is such a gift for an actor.
Do you ever find it difficult to shake your “Disney persona?”
You know, it’s funny I don’t feel I have to shake anything! I’m incredibly thankful to have filmed Startruck with Disney. It gave me such a strong foundation and introduced me to a generation of fans that have really grown with me through the years. I never see it as something to shake off, but more as a stepping stone that helped shape me. As I’ve grown, both as a person and as an actor, I’ve been really fortunate to take on roles that challenge me in new ways and reflect where I am now creatively. I love that I’ve been so supported in that evolution and it’s exciting to keep expanding the story!
Are there any beauty products you love and have used forever?
Something about me…I love beauty. I’m always trying new skin/hair/makeup. But, there are a few staples that have become part of my ritual, no matter where I am or what role I’m in. The Dior Lip Glow in Soft Nude ($42) is always in my bag. It gives that perfect just kissed tint! I’ve used Chanel’s Les Beiges Water-Fresh Tint ($70) for years; it’s one of the few products that makes skin look like skin, just better. I never miss my sunscreen! La Mer’s Broad Spectrum SPF 50 UV Protecting Fluid ($125), is just amazing. It is pricey but I can wear it alone or blend it with anything. I grew up watching my mom use it, and now it’s one of those things I truly invest in. And I always return to YSL’s Touche Éclat ($40), and on long shoot days, it’s magic under the eyes. Lately, I’ve also been reaching for Westman Atelier’s Baby Cheeks Stick in Dou Dou ($48). The most effortless flush!
What is your skin-care routine after a day of filming?
After a day on set, my focus is always on replenishing my skin. I like a gentle double cleanse, and love using Elemis Collagen Pro Cleansing Balm ($40) followed by iS Clinical’s Cleansing Complex ($49). Then I’ll go in with a toning pad or Biologique Recherche P50 ($95) to rebalance and exfoliate. It’s a holy grail for me. I layer in hydration with Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Hyaluronic Serum ($325), then seal everything in with Augustinus Bader’s The Cream ($305) or La Mer’s Soft Cream ($200), depending on what my skin needs.
Are there any wellness, beauty spots in LA that you love?
My girlfriends and I actually have a “favorite things” party where everyone brings or shares something they’re obsessed with that month. So I’m definitely bringing this question to the group! For me, monthly facials are a non-negotiable. They keep my skin glowy and give me a moment to reset. I try to do a sheet mask once a week. I was just in South Korea and love how seriously they take the mask game; I love brands like 111Skin, Medicube and Biodance. I’m also a big fan of lymphatic drainage and infrared saunas at Remedy Place, Pause or even a friend’s house where we sit and chat whilst sweating it out. And honestly, some of my favorite wellness habits are the simplest—getting in a good workout, hitting the beach, reading, a hike.
What is the one thing you are looking forward to most this summer?
This summer feels extra special. There are a lot of exciting things happening personally and professionally. I’m looking forward to some incredible trips, celebrations with the people I love, and just soaking in these summer moments. And I’m so thrilled that The Waterfront is finally out on Netflix! It’s been such a meaningful project for me, and I’m excited people can finally dive into this world we’ve built.
