Good Omens Season 3 Sets Unfortunate Rotten Tomatoes Record

The critics have spoken about Good Omens season 3.

The Prime Video fantasy series has set an unfortunate Rotten Tomatoes record, with critics sharing their thoughts on the super-sized final episode of the show. Good Omens season 3 follows Aziraphale and Crowley after going their separate ways, on the cusp of the Second Coming. However, when the new apocalypse begins to go awry, the angel and demon must come together once more to save the world. Following series creator Neil Gaiman leaving the project after numerous sexual assault allegations, season 3 was truncated into a 90-minute finale episode for the show.

Now, Rotten Tomatoes has begun gathering reviews for Good Omens season 3, which has set an unfortunate record for the Prime Video series. As of writing, the show holds a 75% critic score based on its first eight reviews. This is the lowest critic score for the series thus far. Season 1 scored an 85% based on 98 reviews, while season 2 scored an 88% based on 64 reviews. The initial score from critics doesn’t necessarily reflect how the final score will turn out. But, given how much lower it is already by comparison, it’s not the most encouraging sign.

According to Good Omens season 3 reviews, the series has maintained what makes it special, especially when it comes to Aziraphale and Crowley’s characters. The series hones in on its strongest attributes, those being its sharp, comedic writing, and the relationship between its angel-demon dream team. It’s a charming finale that ends on a fitting note for the show, despite having to condense an entire season of TV into 90 minutes.

But these strengths are balanced out by flaws that some critics were able to overlook, and others they could not. This includes haphazard pacing that makes it feel like a full season of television scrunched into a movie-length story. The biggest complaint is about the potential the season had: While the writing is clearly trying to emulate what made previous seasons work so well, it doesn’t always stick the landing. Instead, there are good ideas littered throughout, but scattershot execution that, for some, make the finale a disappointing ending.

Unlike previous seasons, which were written by Gaiman (and John Finnemore for season 2) and directed by Douglas MacKinnon, season 3 is written by Gaiman, Michael Marshall Smith, and Peter Atkins, while Rachel Talalay steps in as director. Given Gaiman stepped away from the project, though, it’s unclear how much of his scriptwriting made it into the final product. While some critics have issues with the writing and pacing, the still-positive Rotten Tomatoes score signals how well the team did with what they had to bring Aziraphale and Crowley’s journey to a close.

With the episode just one day away from airing, it remains to be seen how Good Omens season 3’s critical score could alter in the coming days. For now, though, its lower score than previous outings indicates a generally positive but not as exciting adventure for the pair. Since it seems the ending itself is fitting, though, there’s a strong chance the show sticks the landing, even if it’s a bumpy ride getting to those final moments.
